what are the specs for the power stearing pumps, what psi and gpm flow?

I am installing a new milemarker hydraulic winch and I may want to upgrade the p/s pump.

Should you have zero luck getting a response, I'll post it for you sometime early next week. I don't have the FSM here at the shop.

900 PSI under normal conditions, 1400 PSI when the pressure release lets loose. No flow specs listed in FSM, that I can find.

Thanks Alan, do you guys recomend a good aftermarket pump, I need 1500psi and 3. 5 gpm, to run the winch efficeintly at full rated line pull.

You might try agrperformance.com for a higher capacity ps pump. I'm not familiar with Dodge trannies but don't you have a provision for mounting a pump on the transmission or T-case? Might be a better option.

Yes my getrag has a PTO cover but I think that is beyond me to get that set up, but I will research it. It probably would be my best option.

Thanks Travis, have you had any experience with this winch and our p/s pumps. I know the winch is excellent but is only as good as the pump.

I read about this winch when it came out and one of the Magazines put it on a RamCharger. They ended up putting 4 ps pumps on the truck. Unsure if it was ever right. This was probably several years ago.

I know the offroading I do, my friends and I usually put a transmission cooler on the truck and plumb the power steering fluid through it, the return line from the steering box. Just wheeling with my 33's and a locker up front after a little while the steering box is too hot to touch. Can't be good on stuff. I would deffinatly put one on the return from the winch. Probably would not hurt to find some sort of inline filter either. The pump starts to kill itself then you have metal in your steering box and your winch.

I do not have a winch of any sort. Hydralic in my mind would be better then electric.

I too have thought of the hydralic pump on the pto drive. It would be more expensive initially but if you went through p/s pumps regularly, the cost would be made back.

Good luck-let us know what you do.

Sorry, no experience with hyd winches. I just think it would be awfully expensive to put on a pto, a pump, a tank, and all the hoses and incidentals for a winch you may use a couple of times a year. If you are going to use it regularly, this may be a good choice. Another alternative is a belt driven hyd pump with an a/c style clutch. If you do run with the p/s pump, put on a large cooler as MMiller said. Any way you go it could get expensive, the way you go should be decided by how often and how hard you'll use it.

Travis. .

Thats a good call, Travis. Matches needs to decide how much he will use it and determine what level of install. The additional pump, accesory driven is a worthwhile idea to ivestigate too. It would be bad to fry the steering pump out in the boonies and not have power steering to get to civilitation.

Another cheep trick is to add a hose to the top of the pump where the dipstick goes. Just find a hose that will slide over the pump and then hose clamp it. I cannot remember what my brother used in the top of the hose, but then he was able to add more fluid to the power steering pump, and this gave the system more oil to work with.

Thanks for all the advise. I will get the cooler and the filter, they come highly recomended. I will hopefully only need the winch... never, but thats why I have one, just in case. I find that with one in the truck I find more reasons to use it. I have it set up on a slide, I have a receiver in the front, rear, and in my bed, helps to haul elk into the back end. I'll let you know how it all works out.
