Well guys, I installed my Prime-Loc remote filter adapter on my 94 TD. Get one! Makes changing the filter a breeze. But remember: NOTHIN’S EASY.
It seems, as a general rule for any man-made item, that once directions are published, they are not updated. I learned from the manufacturer that they obtain their hoses from different sources. The ones that came with my kit cannot be used with installation “Option 2,” which is to attach the hoses to the adapter before attaching the adapter. The reason this option does not work is that later you have to attach the other ends of the hoses to the filter head and there is no way to do this since the hose ends are attached with a fixed fitting that does not swivel, and at that point the hoses themselves cannot be turned. Earlier or other hoses may have swivel fittings.
So I attached the hoses to the filter adapter, screwed on the adapter (where the original filter screwed on—PITA) and then saw the problem. So back off with the adapter and start over.
The pictorial directions were more complete than the written directions. The written directions did not mention replacing the O-ring that was on the original filter stud. They did say “remove the old O-ring. ” Had I consulted the graphic section (at the end of several pages) I would have seen a replacement for the old ring. And yes, I probably should have realized it needed replacing, but I was (note past tense) a firm believer in following directions EXACTLY. So back off the with adapter and start over.
All done! Start up took about four tries as air was removed from the hoses, but all is well…except for two aluminum collars on the hoses with no apparent function. A call to Prime-Loc revealed that they are ID collars that that particular hose manufacturer uses. Said could be cut off, but I judged it not worth the risk with the installation complete.
