I saw on a recent post that someone has the impression that you cannot get a service manual for our trucks. This is incorrect.

I recently learned that Tech Authority (Chrysler’s service & owner’s manual retailer) now has a printed version for 2008 Dodge DR, DH, and D1 trucks. I already owned the CD-ROM version of the manual and have found it to be so awkward to use that it’s almost worthless.

I phoned Tech Authority and ordered the printed version. The cost was (are you sitting down?) $450. 00!!! Tech Authority also uses the shipping as another method to increase their profits. The shipping on the set of manuals came to an additional $40. 90. This was to ship them from Michigan to Indiana. These states share a border.

In spite of the absurdly excessive cost, I am very happy with the manuals. It is a set of SIX large manuals. The descriptions have plenty of illustrations and very good instructions on how to perform the service on our trucks.

Geno’s Garage has stopped carrying these Tech Authority publications/CD’s because of the trouble they’ve had dealing with Tech Authority. The parts guy at my own selling Dodge dealer advised me to go ahead and order the manual directly from Tech Authority because he didn’t want the hassle of dealing with them. It appears that there is little or no markup for the retailer, and both businesses have told me that Tech Authority charges them the same excessive shipping prices.

The Tech Authority people I dealt with over the telephone were courteous, but not knowledgeable about what was in the manuals. All they could do was read the description on their computer screens. They did handle the order efficiently and correctly.

I had a problem with my first set. One volume was slightly damaged. I felt that since I was paying $490. 90 to get these books, they ought to be perfect. I called to complain and they shipped me a replacement set at no charge. They didn’t even require that I return the original set. This shows me that Tech Authority’s customer service is top notch. (For those prices, it ought to be. )

If you are interested in ordering a printed manual set, the phone number for Tech Authority is 800-890-4038. The part number for the printed set for the 2008 trucks is 81-370-08059. I don’t know what other years are available.

I have always ordered a Service Manual with every vehicle I've owned; however, I doubt I would order one if I traded for a new truck. I don't work on my vehicles as in the past because of their increasing complexity.

BTW, I still have the serivce manuals for the '66 Corvette I bought new back in '66 when vehicles were much less complex. :D
