I am looking at a new 2007 5. 9 6spd 4X4. They are getting hard to find. What are the pros and cons of this year? I have a 2001. 5 with a DTT automatic and I want something better gearing wise to tow. Too much gap between Drive and OD.

ANY info is appreciated!! MPG, Any steering issues, ect.

They want $36,500 for a Silver, leather interior, tow pkg, trailer mirrors, Laramie package.

'07 vs. '99

Prior to my '07 purchase,I had a '99 with moderate power mods and like you a DTT auto. I test drove an '06 auto and knew immediately that a DTT upgrade was in the near future at great expense. I elected to special order an '07 with the G-56 trans. The handling, braking, and quiet operation are a quantum leap over my '99. One thing to bear in mind, however,is the DMF setup which is going to necessitate an aftermarket cure. SBC comes to mind and seems to please most owners who have done the conversion. Economy in my situation is identical overall to my '99. With my camper on 24/7,285's and 3500 miles on the clock I'm getting 14. 5 mpg combined driving very conservatively. Hopefully, more miles will loosen up the engine and drivetrain. I'm glad I made the move.

I like my '07. 16,000 miles with no problems. I love the G56, but I don't tow anything. Overall MPG is 17. 5. The truck is all stock, and will stay that way.

Later ;)

DMF?? Only thing comes to mind is Dumb mother fletcher? also SBC???

What RPM are you doing at 65mph?

Do you know what ratio 6th is?

I sold an '01 Regular cab NV4500 3. 42 truck for this '07 G56 Quad Cab 3. 73. All and all, the '07 is a much smoother, more refined vehicle. It's incredibly comfortable, shifts smooth and runs quiet. At a little over 5000 miles, I've seen a best empty MPG of 19. 9 hand calculated.

My biggest complaint so far is that it is screaming for taller gears cruising above 65 mph. I love the truck, but the 3. 42's would be great at this point.

There is a new OD ratio in the latest G56 trans that drops highway rpm. I don't know how to find out if the truck has it or not unless you drive it to find out. I am pretty sure another member (roperteacher) has a 5. 9 G56 with the taller OD. Sounds like the perfect set up to me. My '06 G56 is around 2000 rpm at 65. It is at 2500 to run 75 mph and economy suffers. The new taller OD sure would be nice, or the 3. 42 gears but that sounds like a spendy conversion, especially for the front on a 4x4.

Overall though the third gens are awesome trucks. I considered going back to an '02 HO at one point but the new ones drive much much better and the body on the QC is much more solid because of the pillar between the doors. Ball joints and u-joints will be an issue at some point though greasable replacements are now out there. The DMF (dual mass flywheel) will crap out at some point though mine has 75k miles on it. You can then replace it with components from SBC (South Bend Clutch) to remedy the situation.

I think the Laramie leather is really cheapo, and I do not like the double bubble tailights of the '07s but if you can get a 5. 9 with the taller OD G56 you will have an awesome truck.

Does anyone out there know if there is a transmission code on the G56 to tell you the ratios? Or. . Is there an approxamate production date that they started using the taller OD?

G-56

"Roperteacher's" truck was built late Dec. and I believe the serial number begins with "AE" for the more desirable final ratio. Mine was built 10-16-06 and its serial # begins with "A" only. :{ This final gear is really low.

I have one. Got it in late November. I now have over 18000 miles on it. The only thing I've changed is I have BFG 285-70-17 mud tires on it and I've installed a fuel tank vent kit. It turns about 1950 rpm at 65, which is as fast as I go. It'll pull from 35-65 mph in overdrive with no problem. I keep track of every thing that goes in my truck, so I can absolutely say it got 17. 8 mpg for the first 7500 miles. The last 1150 miles I drove it got 18. 5 mpg. The only long trip I've taken it got 19. 6 mpg. I was hoping to get 20 mpg, but it's a lot better than my old gas Chevy.

I don't think you can go wrong.
