When the VP44 is separated from its drive gear... is the gear captive in the drive train, or do you have to do something to keep it in place as the pump comes out and while it is out?

I have not started the job yet and got to wondering about it.

there is a keyway make sure its at 12 oclock. the gear rests against the vacuum pump and cam gear so it wont just fall down the case. the new pump should come with a new key dont reuse the old key, they are numbered to the pump.

Any particular suggestion if I intend to do the vacuum pump seal at the same time?

That's a great idea. Access is much better with the injection pump removed. I bought a vac pump seal kit from Cummins NW last week for about $10.

No reason to remove the vac pump to change the seal. You're probably right though, I wouldn't remove it without the VP in place.

With the key at 12 o'clock as said above, remove old pump then use it as a guide to turn the new pump to the same angle, then it will enter the gear and studs correctly. If you get a 216 code on startup then the gear was not seated correctly. Then you get a do over...

I got several opinions today. One from the local Cummins dealer who said there was no problem, the gear would stay right there on the cam gear.

Another from someone who said just to leave the gear puller or puller bolts attached to the gear, so it would not get away. Looking at a picture of the front with the timing cover removed, it appears that is a pretty good sized gear and it could not move very far.

More comment is welcome.

I'd leave the puller attached reguardless. No reason to remove it.

If you unbolt the aluminum piece that mounts the ps pump tot eh vac pump the seal is in that. You don't have to remove the vac pump from the case to get to it. At least... . this is how the first gen I did last week was. 24v's could be different?
