build it yourself fifth wheel?

Looking at going with a shortbox and buying a Pullrite 5th wheel hitch (the one that automatically slides back when turning/backing sharpley). Just watched the video they sent me showing this and I must admit, it sure looks like a very good product that works exactly as it is intended for and foolproof.

I know they are pretty pricey compared to other 5vr hitches, but I would be very intrested to hear from anyone who has actually used/towed with one on a shortbox or knows anyone who has used one.

Thanks,

Terry

I have a long box and installed the PullRite Super 5th (non-slider). They make a very fine product. I have never heard of anyone who has the slider who did not like it.

Check my sig for a link to my installation comments for the PullRite SuperRails.

I spoke to Pullrite last friday..... :( They told me that with my 2003 Short Bed Quad cab that their 16k slider WOULD NOT work to allow me to pull an 8. 5 ft wide race car trailer. The trailer is a gooseneck with a 5th wheel pin / plate installed in the gooseneck tube instead of a ball latch so it works with a 5th wheel hitch. Tney said would need the big hitch 24k if I remember right to be able to turn and clear with the pin up to 3" rear of the front of the trailer I would clear with about 2" to spare... .....

That means I have to buy a tapered nose trailer OR a 6 ft riser gooseneck where the hitch sticks out 2 ft farther and looks funny... ..... or sped $4000. 00 for a hitch

I just got an e-mail from pullrite for the same question... It took them longer to respond so I had called in between... They attached a chart that I scanned . . hopefully you can read it...

SHould have mentioned... The part numbers are 3300 for the 16K and 3600 for the 24k. . Sorry about sideways, only way I could upload and have it readable

Now that i have worked the crick out of my neck i must say that is a good chart for reference. Also i installed the 16k slider in my truck and it works great. Yes it was a little pricey but money well spent. When towing and cornering it seems no different than when towing with long bed non sliding hitch. At the closest point (45 degree?) angle there is about 6 inches of clearance to the rear of cab.

Have used a Model 3600 24K Pull Rite for over a year to pull a 100" wide fifth wheel a little over 11,000 miles and it works as advertised. Got the short bed truck so it would fit into the garage and paid the extra bucks to get the automatic slider hitch. They are a little bit of a hassle (gotta grease them) but appear to be a quality product that works exactly as advertised.

I have used the Pullrite Superglide for a year now and am quite satisfied. It is piece of mind not having to worry about the cab hitting the trailer or if I should jump out and try to work a manual slider that may already be bound up.

Also, the mounting system allows for removal to a clean bed. The removal/install procedure is simple, but the unit is damned heavy! Two strong men can do it. I did it once by myself, that was a mistake, but I recovered. My wife helped me once, she won't make that mistake again either. I'm thinking engine hoist, but I don't want to buy one just to lift the hitch. It does make good, secure ballast for my stiff-riding truck ;)

When it's time to hook up, I always clean off the old grease/grime with some mineral spirits and a rag (rubber gloves too), then spray on some lithium grease everywhere metal rubs. There is some slight galling, probably wear out in about a 100 years if I continue to maintain it properly.

The only enduring drawback I see to the Pullrite slider is the keyed kingpin plate that will only work with the Pullrite slider. In other words, someone without the matching hitch can't pull your trailer. Good for theft deterance, bad for roadside assistance.

Cheers,

Neil

I use a 16k SuperGlide and I'm 100% satisfied with it. Yes it may cost more, but the piece of mind is priceless.

I have the 16K Pullrite Slider and it is really great. I like it so much better than the Reese slider it replaced. Paid $2000 installed including the plate on the trailer gooseneck and wiring a plug receiver in the bed.

The Reese hitch guy wanted $500 to transfer my old slider hitch and he was going to drill the frame of the truck. The Pullrite does not require any drilling or welding of the frame.

It is heavy!

I have the 16000 lb hitch with the super glide. Works perfect with the short bed. I use a hoist mounted in my garage to take the hitch in and out of the bed. Bought mine off e-bay complete with mounting hardware.

Keep grinnin,

I hope you havent bought one yet... since your trailer is a gooseneck. . there is another alternative. Several companys make a hitch that bolts onto the gooseneck and extends it out a foot, relocating the ball receiver forward. It works great with gooseneck and a shortbed. . If I remember who manufactured the one I saw I will let you know ... If I remember right there was an add or article in the TDR magizine for one...

The superglide is a great piece and works just as advertised.

Beware of extended pin boxes. They add more leverage against the trailer frame plus you still can not go 90 degrees with a square nose trailer.

Pullrite also makes an adapter so another truck with conventional hitch can pull your trailer in emergency.

Are you sure? I talked to Pulllright when I needed to pull a trailer that did not have the adapter on the pin box. They told me about an adapter for that purpose that clamps on. The nearest adapter was in LA so I looked at the hitch and found that if I clamped the sliding portion so that it could not move I could pull a normal trailer but had to be careful about tight turns. Worked fine.

An adapter so that our modified trailers can be pulled by anyone, I could go for one of those. Price?

I purchased one of those adapters from PullRite. The adapter will let someone else with a standard fifth-wheel hitch pull a trailer with a PullRite plate on it, but you cannot pull a standard trailer with your PullRite hitch.

The adapter has a kingpin which locks into a standard hitch. On the top side of the adapter are brackets which hold your PullRite hitch head. It looks like it would raise your trailer several inches and would be for emergencies only. I think it cost about 150. from PullRight. I keep it in my trailer storage compartment in case I ever need to be towed with a standard hitch.

Pullrite Superglide

Towed with mine this summer about 8500 miles over 7 weeks. Hitched and unhitched many times. Hitches and unhitches very easy! Just have to be aware of a couple of things. First, when hitching up, you have to be sure your wheels are chocked and lower your trailer low enough so that it actually causes your truck to squat as you back into the hitch. It locks into place with a positive clunk! as it connects. Very solid hitch action. The problems arise when you have the trailer too high.

When unhitching, raise the trailer just high enough so that you can see the hitch slip and the truck rolls ever so slightly as the weight come off the truck. It slips right out, as you pull forward, slick as a whistle!

You will love it. Get the mount where you can completely remove the hitch from the bed. No Rails in the bed. I remove mine with a chain hoist in 15 minutes.
