Yeah, got the head back from the machine shop, I am tabbing the dowel pin and need some torque specs on tightening the gear bolts (at least the 2 that aren't behind the cam gear dangit), the timing cover torque specs.

Also, what is the torque specs on the 2 cam retainer bolts?

Also what order do I go in when torqueing down the headbolts, and to how much? Head shaved . 010 with a +. 020 gasket. Putting in 370's w/ the thin washers. etc etc.

Anyone with the numbers off the top of their head post please.

I appreciate any help,

JD

P. S. I wish I had the time to figure out how to get the lifters out and get the lift pump off so I can pull out the cam enough to loc-tite the 3 bolts. :(

The bolts for the :

gear housing are 18ftlbs

oil pump 18ftlbs

cam retainer 18ftlbs

gear cover 18 ftlbs

I torque all to 20Ftlbs

The head torques to

* 12valve all to 66ftlbs

long bolts then to 89ftlbs

then turn all short and long bolts 90 degrees

* 24 valve all to 77ftlbs

then turn 90 degrees

start in the center and work to the ends.

You can raise the tappets (lifters) using dowel rod pushed into tappet lift up secure in pairs with rubberbands or zip ties. Lift pump is two 10 mm bolts torque is 18ftlbs.

that will allow you to pull the cam out.

Any questions PM me Phone # and I'll call you

I appreciate the info. My buddy and I worked on the truck til late last night. Got the fuel lines changed before I put the head back on. Got the head on, but not torqued down yet.

We worked on jigging the dowel pin. Went to put the timing cover back on and the crank seal was giving us trouble. Will have to make another attempt at it again this evening.

I borrowed a buddies timing pump kit and I am going to figure out how to time this thing while the truck is down.

Thanks,

JD

JD... . Send MDW a PM... . he helped me do my head at his shop, and he has done several. . He would be lots of help to you, and I am sure would not mind lending a hand to ya!! Best of luck! I had to do 2 in one month. . same truck. . That was rough! Anyways, like I said, Send Mike (MDW) a PM...

Appreciate the help. I will probably P. M. when I come to a brick wall. So far, I have inched on up there and got the head torqued down and the valves set. Going to work on getting the manifold tapped for the probe and get it back on and go from there. Will get back to the timing cover tonight.

I have had quite a bit of help from a guy here in town that is probably one of the most die-hard 4BT & 6BT fanatic. I took his jig tool he let me borrow from him back to him last night. He had about 10 6BT's and 4 4BT's laying in his shop. He is also a Gear Vendors dealer and had about 10 of those laying around. He puts Cummins in the Fords around here and does a few Chevys too. He just got finished putting a 4BT in a '94 Chevy.

Later,

JD
