Question: 3rd Gen wheel bearing removal

I have read everything I can here and else where before starting the project. The problem I have is pushing out the hub. I'm using an 18mm deep well socket with extensions and I larger socket turned around on the other end for increased surface area to push against. I also am pushing against the axle tube itself.

Thinking about purchasing the Snap-on tool for this? Maybe the length of extension is hindering the removal process.



Any insight from experienced members would be helpful.

In PA I would soak it with some good penetrating oil before making any attempts. I have worked on Canadian and Alaskan trucks they were bad enough.

Agreed, soak the heck out of it with PB blaster. The deep 18mm socket should do the trick, always worked for me. Might help to give the unit bearing a few good smacks with a good sized hammer to shake things up a bit and break the rust contact. When you put the new one in, it helps the next time if you clean the bore in the knuckle really good and anti-size it like it's going out of style.

I use a six inch piece of steel that is one inch thick. I found extensions to have too much flex. First time hub removal should take up to ten minutes. No hammer needed. I also don't live were they salt the roads.

A neighbor had made a tool fashioned after the snap-on tool for dodge hubs, and had used it on two other dodge trucks. Less than ten minutes to remove mine.



Applied more pressure with steering wheel than I had the first time.

The Snap-On tool was worth the approximately $45. 00! I've lent it out to several friends. It worked on a 1996 CTD too.
