I have been thinking about getting some Alcoa wheels for my 2500. I have some questions for any Alcoa wheel owners. I remember hearing somewhere that the center hole is large enough that the wheel would fit on several different makes. The tightening of the lug nuts is what actually centers the rim. Is this true? Have you had any problems with this? Or gone thru more wheel studs as a result of this? Thanks in advance. KL

KL,

It's true on the Alcoa wheels and the OEM wheels. They are not Hub Centric?. I have never heard of any problems. A few TDR members have run them for a few years. They will probably chime in.

I just put Mickey Thompson Challengers (made by Alcoa) on my 2500 this week. I absolutley love them. They sit in further than I had thought they would too. You can't go wrong buying Alcoa.

Must have something to do with the style b/c I had two sets of Alcoas on my dually, a set of 16's and then a set of 19. 5's, and they were both hub centric.

Both my original Alcoa LTS,and my new LTS V2 are hub centric,or very close to it. There is just enough room to get a steel hub center in. Even if they aren't,it's fine to run them,as they will be piloted by the studes and wheel nuts.

issue 40 does not have a write up on the 19. 5 alcoas ... any one have a price or part # for the new ones yet? i have a friend buying 19. 5 ricksons he's waiting on a order im trying to get him to get the alcoas instead of chrome steelies... oh well see what happens

thanks

19. 5" Alcoa's for the 2003's are supposed to be available mid-June, and I believe are to be hub centered. The protoypes that Jim Swails wrote about in his eartroamer column looked pretty sweet i hope the production wheels look the same.

On the off chance that a couple of you have purchased the Alcoa wheels for your duallie's, how do you handle the rotation problem?

Thanks,

Robert

Yes.

At least as far as semi wheels go, the wheels that are centered by the lug nuts are called "stud-piloted". The ones that are centered by the hub are called "hub-piloted" and use the 2 piece nut (as the Dodge dually trucks do, mine are).

Both are fine on pickup trucks. As far as semis go, I prefer the hub-piloted wheels. They also use a single 2 piece lug nut and are much easier to remove. The stud-piloted wheels use 2 lug nuts. 1 inner that holds the inside wheel on and also the outer one is threaded onto. These are a PITA since the two usually rust together even when using anti-sieze. Plus if you do it enough, the lug nut will eventually wear into the rim enough to get stuck AND rusted. Then you usually need to get out the blue wrench  to remove them.

I have had M/T Alcoa Challengers wheels on my '98. 5 2500 4x4 Ram since '99. I can also assure you that they are lug centric (not hub centric).
