That's another good choice, and it still has the CI rating. I use it in my old Mercedes, but I don't leave the oil in for 18K miles, it wouldn't come out through the drain plug.

If I went with the AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel & Marine Motor Oil SAE 15W-40 would it be ok to start with a synthetic at 14k miles? I always thought they needed a break in period before you go with a synthetic.

IMO, with the precision machining done at Cummins, this engine is pretty much broken in by the time it leaves the dealership. I wouldn't worry about using synthetic oil at this point. Some high performance vehicles come with synthetic from the factory.

I have ran the Amsoil Synthetics in my Dodge Turbo Diesels since 1991, and I continue to run it in my 2010. I do run a by-pass oil filtration system, so I extend the OCI considerably, as much as 100,000 miles. Some people would reject that, but I do periodic oil analysis, so I get a good picture of what the engine is doing as well as what condition the oil is in. In all my GASOLINE powered vehicles, I use the Amsoil oils and do OCI at one year intervals, with never a problem, since 1980 running the Amsoil oils.

As the 2013 RAM CUMMINS Diesel comes out, the FACTORY DRAIN INTERVAL is now 15,000 miles! Manufacturers are extending drain interval every year!
