Competition Fastest 3rd gen....

I have a 1st gen dually (see sig). I went to the Perris pulls and decided to try pulling the truck. Having no idea what I was doing, I asked around a little bit, and decided to launch in 3rd 4-Low. My idea was to get the clutch out easy, then hit the throttle. Clutch slipped bad. Instead of quitin the pull and going again, I just reached up and grabbed 2nd gear. Off I went, flying down the track (not really, but I wanted to think so). 182 feet later, the sled broke and I had to stop (not really, but I wanted to think so). The whole thing happened so fast, I cant give you guys any specifics, other than I dont think I got all the way into the throttle. So, here is my question. Am I spinning my wheels thinking I can pull this truck the way it is set up? The turbos are pdr hx-40/ht3b. I like the truck, and due to the fact that I need it to tow a 15000 pound RV, I cant get too radical. One other thing, I did the pull with the 245/70/r19. 5 tires. Should I change those out for the stock wheels and tires? I am going to put a sb dual disc clutch in soon. Sorry the posts so long, but I wouldnt bother asking if I didnt like the little taste of sled pulling I got. Ryan

I have never seen a set of 19. 5s that didn't hook up. Sounds like you have more tire/power than clutch.

You may as well wait for the Dual Disc.

Oh yea, if you have twins, or big singles, and are planning on pulling more in the forseeable futue, you may want to get a clutch and flywheel that are SFI certified.

Peter should have those already.

Sled Puller- What clutches are SFI certified, and what does that mean? Is the setup I have (after replacing the clutch) Ok for pulling? And who is Peter?

What Is the SFI Foundation, Inc. ?

The SFI Foundation, Inc. (SFI) is a non-profit organization established to issue and administer standards for specialty/performance automotive and racing equipment.

Peter is owner of SBC.

In a nutshell, SFI will spin flywheels and clutch assemblies, until they explode, so we know we have something that is safe to use, in a race application.

The only clutches I know of at this time that are SFI approved, are full blown comp only from Scheids, Haisleys, EEP. However, all three of them, and SBC are supposed to have SFI smaller clutches soon.

Those turbos are great towers/pullers.

Hey Ryan,

I'm with Gene, you just need some clutch before anything else. Just like I told you at Perris, no single disc is going to allow you to pull in a tall enough gear to be competitive. Once you get your Dual disc, we'll look at your gearing and tire size a little more and decide where you are at. That is a nice ride by the way. PM me when you get a chance.

Thanks Tom. I have been working on fixing the clutch problem all week. It should be ready to go soon. I liked the mods you did to your truck, especially the tank. I ll see ya at the next pull

Right on, I am buying a different box for my truck and I will be upgrading the turbo as well. I'm also building a set of traction bars for it, so we'll see how it does next pull.

Oh boy, here it comes..... What kinda turbo you gonna use? What box are you going to? BTW, can you PM or post the specifics of how you decided to hook that tank up? It looked like you had a pump wired in? Thanks, Ryan

All I did with the tank was started with an 80 gallon saddle tank off of an '88 Freightliner semi and built a cradle to hlod it and two cargo straps over the top to cinch it down into the cradle. On the second gen trucks there are tie down points in the front of the bed which I used steel hooks welded to threaded rod to tie it down in the bed. I bought a small electric fuel pump, wired it in via a relay and switch inside the cab. I plumbed the fuel line from the pump to the blank fitting on top of the tank pickup.

As far as the turbo I am going to use an HX35/40 hybrid with a wastegated 14cm housing and I am switching to an Edge Comp box.
