Has anyone installed either of the quick drain style plugs for the motor oil from Genos. Was just getting ready to order some filters and was thinking about getting one of those if I can get some positive feedback. If you have one which one and are there any problems with them.

Thanks,

Joe

Quick drain oil plugs

I wouldn't use one again. If it comes out (for whatever reason) no engine warranty. If you use the stock plug and it comes out, well maybe Dodge will cover your engine repair under warranty assuming the last guy to put it in did it right. Consider what you gain and what you may lose. Just my 0. 02. IMHO Ken Irwin

I have had one now for two oi; changes it is great. (I guess the only reason that it might come out is if you don't tighten it. ) Use a torque wrench and tighten it to specs it will work great. It sure saves alot of mess, and makes draining out a small amount of oil if you want to analyze it a piece of cake.

I don't like the idea of anything hanging low off the oil pan like that. I dirve off road and hop the occasional curb and the thought off whacking that off and losing all my oil in seconds has always scared me. Could be paranoia but the extra 30 seconds to take out the stock flush plug does not cut into my day too much!!

I had the "Finger Touch" on the White Obsession with no problems at all. I now have another "Finger Touch" on the Ghost Rider. Also installed one on my wife's Sable.

They work great and no mess!

This is what scares me about them

This is the reason I am hesitant of getting one. But has anyone really had a problem or is it just Paranoia.

If it falls out, how would anyone know whether it was the stock one or the "finger touch" drain? :D :D

Seriously... I had one in my 2001 and it was trouble free for over 4 1/2 years of driving and changing oil. Unless you do a lot of "off road" through the brush and stuff, I just don't see this as a problem. I'll be putting another one in my 2005 when I do my first oil change... ;)

Yeah I had a problem

Not saying this was anyones fault. But picture this: I was coming down out of Yellowstone NP onto I-90. It was a beautiful, cool crisp morning and I was going to turn east and head for home (Norfolk VA). I had changed my oil about 3500 miles ago and installed a Super Plug with magnet from Geno's. Just coming into town when I see a little brown stuff on the front of the travel trailer in the mirror. As I'm trying to figure out what it is we see the Flying J sign, 3 miles until we get fuel and get up onto I-90. I look back in the rear view mirror and the front of the trailer is now covered with this brown substance. The gears are slowly turning WTF? That looks like oil!!! TIME STANDS STILL  I look down the oil can is lit up on the dash and the oil pressure gage says 0 PSIG :--) :--) Remember on the 97s, no chime or check gauges light. I looked at the boost gauge 8 PSIG, speedometer says 60 MPH. I reach down and turn the key off and the tachometer immediately drops to zero BUT the engine is still running. OH you idiot push in the clutch. As we coast down from 60 MPH, My heart starts beating again. I muscle the truck and trailer into a bar room parking lot, hmm no power steering. I'm dazed in that I can't believe this is happening to me. I operate a nuclear power plant in the US Navy on a submarine as the Machinery Division supervisor! The magnetic plug is stuck onto the rear of the oil pan bowl. There is oil all over everything under the truck. This is a fine mess you've gotten us into Ollie. The cause was eventually determined to be that the cork gasket that came with the Super Plug would crush up into the pan where the punch had rounded the pan when it punched the hole through. IE insufficient clamping force. The engine survived and is still with us today. Geno's and the manufacturer stood behind the plug from a liability standpoint and did all the testing to satisfy me and Mark Chappel that the engine was not damaged from what apparently was a short duration loss of oil flow. Geno's had only been selling the Super Plug for a short time and told me that I was the second truck that that had happened to in a matter of days. They had pulled the Super Plug from their inventory. It was eventually released with the stock Cummins gasket which is a plastic coated washer. So that is why I'm leary of anything that can result in catastrophic damage and may give little or no warning. Do a search I told the story in full detail over on the 2nd gen forum. In an old issue of the TDR is a story of a guy who installed a Gear-Vendors unit. They put a plastic plug into the original speedometer hole and relocate the speedometer drive to the rear of the Gear-Vendors unit. Well the plug came out, he lost his transmission oil, and the drive train set up at 65MPH. He walked away from the crash but by the grace of God. All the above IMHO. Ken Irwin

PS Now we have the TDR Travel Companion to help with situations like this! :D

IF it falls out is the issue. I don't want it to fall out. I know that Murphies law states that it will happen at the worst posible time in the worst possible location. IMHO Ken Irwin

Two thoughts come to my mind:

"Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you"

"Maybe you are paranoid, but not paranoid enough" (X-files).

I've been using the Heavy Duty Oil Plug (With Magnetic Tip) I got from Genos. Has anyone had problems with it coming loose. It's been on my truck about a year and a half with no problems for me yet. The ad talks about the stock plug (flush mount) developing possible fractures from to much torque, is one reason I purchased the HDOP. I didn't see the Super Plug listed in the Genos catalog that Ken spoke of having his problem with, maybe it was discontinued. I do keep the stock one with me just in case I loose the HDOP. Hope I never have that situation come about. :--)

Very good point made ,

however i had excellent results with the drain pug i had in my 99 . Its not a low hanging valve but a flush drain plug , with a o-ring cap as a back up shuold the spring loaded valve fail.

Still debating whether to install one in my my 05' .

I got a dumb question. . . . If anyone is worried about one comeing back out, why not add a few drops of locktite thread locker? Also, as long as it has a suitable washer/gasket and is torqued to the proper spec, I don't see why one whould come back out. I will be putting one on the 03 here shortly, when I convert from 15w40 amsoil to 5w30 amsoil.

Like i said i had no problem with mine , never a drop of oil leaked from it.

Howver the FINGER TOUCH ENGINE OIL DRAIN PLUG WITH NIPPLE doesn't look too promising . Only because the possiblilty of it gettin' hung up on something.

Ordered the 2 part easy drain with the hose from Jenos when my 99 was new. Really well made, all brass and o-rings , has a brass cap that screws over the valve when not in use. If I remember right the darn thing is made in Sweden or Denmark. With cap on it protudes no further down than the stock bolt. Remember to warm'er up first or it won't drain well, when shes warm it flows fine. Mike

Hey CMB,

You said you had the EZ Change Drain plug that uses the hose to drain the oil. Does it make your oil changes a pretty clean and easy job? It is kind of spendy, but I think I might order that kit. How long is the drain tube that comes with it? Do you think that this one is a better choice then the Finger touch valve?

Thanks for your input, just hate to spend $50. 00 for something that isn't worth it.

we cant buy from geno in canada,so i cant comment on theirs. i installed one from Fenco. they are used in the big highway trucks. its brass has an o-ring and brass screw on cover . to use it you remove the cover and screw in a brass fitting which comes with a green plastic hose . no problems . with the cover on only sticks down one half inch below pan. bought it from a kenworth dealer.
