2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Quieting the Beast...

Having just driven a 2010 Mega Cab. I was wondering if there are any tricks to quieting the interior noise experienced in my 99. I don't know if adding another "silencer" to the hood would help? The Dodge engineers have done a great job of making the new Dodges a very pleasant vehicle to be around!

There are some threads on here about sound deadening. I like the sounds from my 12 valves so didn't pay much attention to them.

The main reason for the new trucks being so quiet is not that Dodge did anything in that regard, but the fact that the newer Cummins engines are so much quieter to begin with than our older ones. Multiple injection events had a lot to do with that.

If you search the forums you will find that there is much written on sound insulation but one of the most extreme efforts has to be the job done by member JBonpua, who turned his 3rd Gen into a Lexus with all the sound deadening he has done.

Main reason I've never had any interest in the common rail motor is the "quietness" compared to the 1st and 2nd gen. 12 and 24V's. To me, that's the whole character of the truck. I rarely even have my radio on.....

I like the sound at idle but when I'm going down the road it could be quieter. It does quiet down a bit at highway speeds. I always have the radio on!

Me too!!!!!! i love hearing that thing sing to me and hate when someone gets in my truck and wants to turn the radio on. it ruins the entire trip for me... .

I'm pretty happy with the sounds of my truck too, but that has nothing to do with the intent of BHolland's post.

Having seen lots of threads here over the years dealing with sound deadening and quieting for the 24 valve trucks, it seems like there are two avenues you can take, depending on if you want to spend money, or if you want to spend time.

For the money route, there are the aftermarket blankets that cover the oil pan, valve cover, exhaust manifold, turbo, and possibly other things. These attempt to deaden the typical resonators of engine noise. Apparently very effective, but they don't do anything to dampen road noise.

For the time route, you pull out your seats and insulate all the surfaces that might transmit sound into the cab. I've seen successful reports using Dynamat Extreme, Brown Bread and DIY stuff involving Herculiner covered with 1/32" sheet lead.

There was a huge thread here a couple years back about sound deadening. You really should spend some time doing some searches.

Twins do a lot to quiet down the exhaust noise but sometimes at the expense of a little turbo whine. Those twins are music to my ears when pulling heavy and going over tough grades. A certain satisfaction is felt when little gas engine powered cars struggle going up hills and lose speed and I'm pulling my 18k toyhauler with no reduction in speed at all. The turbos just sing louder until I crest the grade
