I see where Dodge is recalling RAM trucks.

I have heard about the front end problem, but it seems like Dodge was ignoring it,till now.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2013/11/08/ram-recall/3479939/

Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC

SUMMARY:

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 RAM 4500 and 5500 trucks manufactured February 20, 2007, through December 22, 2012. The left tie rod assembly may break.

CONSEQUENCE:

A failure of the tie rod assembly may result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a new left tie rod assembly, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in December 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N63.

NOTES:

This recall supersedes tie rod recall 10V657. Vehicles that were previously remedied under recall 10V657 are also affected by this campaign. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

That recall has been around for some time now.

I had it done about a year and a half ago.

Fairly simple, you just have to get the truck's front end realigned.

Thanks for the update. Glad your truck got the front end realinment.
I read the post on the Nuwa Forum origially just past it on here to TDR.

Interesting, I just received the recall notice yesterday and mine is a 2012 3500 SRW. Guess it's off to the dealer. My notice says they will begin replacing after Jan. 6, 2014.

IIRC the new parts have been made fool proof if it is like the 13's.The tie rod ends will be keyed so they have to be installed parallel

I got mine last week.... says "call the dealer after 6 January 2014 for an appointment". I am continuing to drive ours.

Just read the NHTSA notice and guess I better read my notice again. Maybe it applies to the 'no longer owned by me' 04.5 SRW, rather than the 2012.

Thanks Bob, I just read the notice I was sent again and it is for 2008 to 2012 trucks. Guess a call to the dealer will be upcoming!

I would hope that if the alignment was changed because of something the dealer does that the dealer would do an alignment as part of the job.

I got my recall notice last week, need an oil change anyway, good timing. Bob what dealer do you work for, I might start going there if it's not to far?

Well, I contacted my dealer in Exeter NH to check it out and it appears that the "recall work" I got done over a year ago is also affected since all they did was replace the tie rod end with the existing style.

The parts are still not available and I need to contact my dealer again sometime after Feb. 10 to make an appointment to fix or have it inspected if I am concerned about the front and they still don't have the parts.

Now, i'm getting concerned. if I have 6,000+ in the dump bed and/or pulling my backhoe I will now be very nervious to say the least!

They have BETTER GET THESE PARTS OUT to the dealer ASAP before there is a major loss of life in some accident. These trucks aren't some little Civic.

I got wind of the recall from the dealer 2 days after they heard of it.... My service advisor put my number on a waiting list. Well, I called the other day and asked when could I bring my truck in for the work. They said they don't have the parts and gave me a number to call. I called the number, some recall hotline. They told me they are only sending 1 set per week to dealers as they do not have enough and that they do not know when they will be able to fulfill all the orders. I told her that if something were to happen to someone because of this Dodge could be sued for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I'm starting to dislike my truck more and more..... Dodge sucks, I can't believe the garbage they use as "parts". 12k miles on my front-end which was completely replaced from the last re-call and it's full of loose parts already. Can't get my alignment done correctly (new tires right before I learned of the recall) cause the loose parts, Some of the loose parts are to be replaced under this new recall.... But who knows when it will happen. In the mean time my new front tires are wearing unevenly. I may jump ship, I can get about $30k for my rig.... Which is a hefty down payment on a 2014 Sprinter 3500 van!!

Tired of Dodge's BS.... one thing after another. Seeing how Diesel has been $4.19 for the past year now I would enjoy seeing better MPG.... The Sprinter may be a viable option.

Built to order it would be cheaper than a 2014 Ram 2500 Megacab!

I'm not flaming you r.taylor but every manufacturer runs into this same kind of B.S. from time to time. My other bad experience was with a 6.7 stroke that blew the engine fairly quickly. They took 43 days to get the new engine from Ford because of "rotating assembly issues", whatever that means...........Heard later that rod bolts were not being torqued correctly and they had to recall and tear down and inspect lots of engines. They had my truck just two days shy of lemon law requirement for a new truck.

Realistically I don't see this as a huge issue. The incident rate is very very low and almost always happens at low speed so I'm not that concerned. Everyone is different though so if it bothers you, ditch the truck. Otherwise, get it fixed when the parts come in!

Good luck with thinking a Spriner is better than a Ram

Amen to that.

Also that 3-pointed star in the grill dictates high parts prices (if the parts are available in the first place). Needed a block heater for one last week, finally had to get it from e-bay.

Those Sprinters are a mite strange, special tools for just about everything. Oil and fuel filters are expensive even through Fleetguard.

How do you know for sure that you need to have the Tie-rod ball joints repaired without an inspection?

I have a 2008 Mega Cab built in Sept 07 and purchase new in Nov 07. There was an earlier recall that was to update the trucks front end to the newer style linkage. Will I declined this recall wanting to keep the older style 04-07 front end linkage. Will on this latest recall N62 I took the truck in for inspection and my truck does not need to have the Tie rods ball joints replace as the ball joints are the old style and do not require any repair.

If you still have the steering damper that has a stud on it instead of clamping to the tie rod then you probably are OK just need a inspection to make sure.

Truck was inspected Dec 2nd at dealership.... I have the "new" clamp on style damper that they installed from the previous recall.
