Like above question. How hard is it to replace, how long a job. Need to worry about axle dropping on to seal and damaging?

Could use a little help here TDR members as I need to do this fix this coming Friday. Thanks, Tom

The axle won't damage the seal when you remove it. The seal is actually between the hub and the spindle on the rear differential. If you will post the year model of your truck, someone will give you some hints on the procedure. I would guess it would take between one and two hours if you are pretty handy with tools. bg

We need more truck info. If it is a drum brake truck, the hardest part of the R&R is backing the brake off so the drum will slide off. I use a small diameter long shaft screwdriver to release the automatic adjuster so I can back off the star wheel.

Remove the tire, unbolt the axle and slide it out, back the brake off, if it has out board drums pull the drum off the hub, pull the axle nut lock, then remove the nut, it is 2-9/16's then slide the hub off. Wash and inspect the hub and bearings before install. Do not over tighten the bearings. Make sure they are seated fully, tighten the nut hard to seat them, then back the nut off and re-tighten the nut just snug, while spinning the hub. You want zero movement out of the bearings when shaking the hub. Pre-lube the bearings with some grease.

PS: use a new axle flange gasket, they are metal and will leak if re-used or use silicone on both sides.

How do you make 273 posts without putting your truck info into the signature?

GAmes, Thanks for the question, I had my truck profile listed years ago but I guess what with the changes at TDR website it was lost, Whatever, I cut & Pasted. I need to figure out how to move it so it is visible to members, sorry.
