What kind of a job is it to replace the real axle seal on a 2001 2500? As I was finishing up my synthetic lube install on the real axle, I noticed the RR axle seal was leaking... . I'm not familiar with this axle, can I replace the seal without draining the pig i. e. pull the axle out from the end without removing anything from the pig?

I don't know what it takes but I just had mine done under the warranty. What really upset me is that the brake shoes was not covered under the warranty. I normally do my own brakes but since they already had it tore down I had the dealer replace the shoes at the same time and you don't want to know what they charged to do it either!!

Yes, you can change the seal without draining. Jacking up one side at a time will help you to loose very little fluid. Go to NAPA and get the special socket you need to get the hub nut off, and get two new retainer clips for the nut.

Jetson,

do a search on axle seal and you should find a good bit of information. It's not a hard job to do and you can just jack up one side at a time to keep from losing fluid from the axle. Note that NAPA has 3 different DANA rear axle sockets, so you need to know which one. I posted part number information in some earlier posts.

If you can't find the info, let me know and I'll look it up for you.
