Thanks Guys, mines doing the same thing, exactly, what pads are you all going with to correct the problem, should i turn the rotors to while i'm at it?,truck only has 16500miles for a 01. 5.
No need to turn the rotors. I went with Autozone's ceramic pads. $50 for the rear set.

My rig is an 02, we are expecting rain here on tuesday so Im gona pull it in the garage and take a look my question is how does the emergency brake owrk? Is it braked by the disk brakes or are there little shoes inside the hub.

There are shoes inside of the drum at the center of the rotor. The primary brakes are std disk/pad/caliper setups, and the e-brake is std shoes/drums only actuated by the ebrake cable.

Thanks! Ill tear the whole thing apart in the am

R/R mine yesturday after reading about the issue and sure enough. Drivers side inboard fell apart before I got it out. The rest was (some what) attached but was cracked all the way thru and loose. Thanks for the heads up.

Rear brake pads

The rear brake pads on my 2001. 5 also crumbled at exactly 40,000 miles and I could not immediately change them but when I did I could not believe how the rust from the worn rotors adhered to the aluminum rim and the paint on the rear of the truck!! That was a hard earned lesson. I used some of that clay product to remove most of it. There are still traces of it all over the place though.

UPDATE-----I had my rears done today and YES the pads were completely separated---another annoying problem fixed with the help of the TDR,gald i took the advice and had them checked before towing time, the dam sqeek was bothering me for some time and just could not find it :{ ---problem now solved. :p :p :p . If you have the symptoms decribed above it worth checking out just to be on the safe side. Later DW

rear pads

I had the same problem with my 2001. 5. Everything seemed fine until about 92k and then I heard a squeak from the back. Sure enough, when i pulled up the caliper, the pads dropped out in pieces. I had never seen anything like that before. I always check the linings at every rotation and when ever the wheel is off. NAPA true stop on mine.

I just did my fronts for the second time and my rear pads for the first time last week. 180k on them. Still had about 1/8 -3/16ths left of thickness on them(rear). Glad to report they didnt fall apart when I took them off. All looked pretty darn good for 180k.

Well, I just replaced my original front pads last night and the passenger-side piston-half pad came out in three pieces. The friction material had corroded off the backer and split in two. As soon as the caliper cleared the disk the bits fell to the floor. That's after 6 years and 108k miles (I used my exhaust brake quite a bit).

So, this whole pad separation thing may not be limited to just the rears. If you're still running the original pads, you may want to physically take the caliper off for inspection rather than eyeball the amount of pad left.
