After 350k miles on my 99 2500 4x4 my rear drum brakes still suck. I was looking to swap in a 01-02 Dana srw 80. But very hard to find and I am finding the later AAM. 11. 5 axles much easier and cheaper. Any reason not to go that route. I know spring pads and other stuff have to be modified, that's easy.

Am I missing the boat on an easier upgrade?

You might want to try the larger wheel cylinders, a lot of 1st. and 2nd. gen owners have done this. The Dodge 3/4 tons used 1 inch pistons, I changed to the '93 dually size 1 1/8. The K20 Chevy used 1 1/16 and the K30 used 1 3/16, they will all fit.

I'm sure you've already looked into this, but the 2500's have a height sensing brake valve for the rears. Many have disabled this and full braking has returned (rather than just when you are loaded). Might be easier than an upgrade.
 
Thanks on both replies. I had not heard of wheel cylinders before. I have played With the height / load adjuster before. Never noticed anything. Do people just plumb around it?

I tow a 10k trailer and just would like to get more stopping power for the unforseens.

Not sure about this but if you are thinking about an AAM axle will you have to go with 17" wheels to clear the rotors?

It's bone stock with a 6 sp. Exhaust brake sounds like a good way to go. I have spent all my money on the race car and not the tow rig. So time for the tow rig to get a little love. I can't afford to go new so decided to spend some on the rig to make a little better. The truck runs awesome and has been very very reliable. ( yes I just knocked on the wood bar). But the race trailer is now 10k or so and its a little sketchy at times.

You'll love it. I did the proportioning valve bypass,1 ton wheel cylinders and a super waste,the EGR rear disc conversion. Not until I had the Pacbrake installed would my '99 stop safely with the camper mounted.
 
Thanks for the info. I looked into some of this 10 years ago, but spent all time and money on racing. Truck is apart converting to non unit bearing set up. I'm sold on the exhaust brake as I see the value to it. I have always been scared to even touch this truck because it has been so good to me. I still have the original belt on this thing.

Holy cow! First accessory installed on my truck. I have 160,000 miles on my OEM brakes and have never even adjusted the rears--I do have a steep driveway which I turn around and it must be working the self adjusters. As far as the height / load adjuster, I believe you just take it out or disable it.
 
I have followed my brake lines all the way back and there is no elusive height sensing proportioning valve... I have looked and looked, and my drums still suck.

I ended up puting BD exhaust brake on the truck... . wow should have done it 12 years ago. I have put 5000 plus miles on the truck in two weeks. love it.
