I just picked my truck up from the dealer from when a guy hit me. Make them replace everything. Your truck didn't have a screwed up connector before the wreck--it shouldn't have one after the wreck either. I had a small chip in one of my rims, but I made them replace it. And inspect the truck thoroughly when you pick it up, they tried to give me my truck back still scratched, but I made them take it right back in the shop and buff the scratches out.

I'd suggest you get your insurance adjuster out to look at it if not already. When I got hit by a car, their insurance gave one price qoute, and my insurance gave almost $2000 higher price qoute. Needless to say I took my insurance check and let my insurance company work the details out with the other persons company.

Good luck,
Pat

I work for a collision shop and every hitch that has been hit gets replaced... if we see physical damage or not to the actual hitch. There is too much liability involved to take a chance.

Didn't we have this conversation a week ago at the meeting? If you wouldn't have had that liftgate, it would have been very expensive! Check everything to make sure it's not out of whack. Measure the clearance between bed and cab. The bed tends to spread in the back after a hit so check that too.
Good Luck

Yeah, I spoke too soon. But it did do a pretty good job of protecting things from the looks of it. I'm sure that with the stock bumper, I would have had damage to the bed and tailgate.

The whole insurance thing is such a PITA though.

get yourself a neck brace and don't fall for the "brady bunch briefcase trick. " #ad

I've been hit 3 times since I picked up the truck last June. 1st time in Avondale Az. infront of Dodge. $2,750 damage and her insurance was'nt good. #ad
Second time here in Rocky Point infront of my store... Hit and Run!! #ad
third time... This Tiny little toyota 2X4 pulled in close to the passenger side of my truck when I was at a Qwik mart here in Mex and I didn't see it when backing up... I hit it with the R rear corner of the box #ad

#ad
... All damage is to the box so I am not going to fix any of the damage. . I will wait and find a perfect box and just bolt it on. #ad

Go get yourself a notebook and start writing down everything! that has changed due to the accident. DO IT NOW! You Truck, your life sleep patterns etc. It is considered evidence if it is written down, but hearsay if you just remember it later. Got hit by a drunk in the rear about 6 years ago, the buck fifty on th enote book is worth thousands.
Hope You and your truck come out OK.

I was stopped in traffic, center lane on the NB Loop 101 in Scottsdale. He was in a '89 Buick Regal. I saw him coming in my mirror (I always look back when stopped on the highway) he was looking to his left until the last few seconds where he lock-m-up.

BAM!!

Don't think the Ram moved much. I pulled off to the side and he was stuck there.

Receiver hitch and Tommy Gate (those things are pretty tough) took the blow pretty good. Smashed the electical plug and shifted the Tommy Gate to the right a 1/4 inch.

Now, is there anything I should have inspected? Should the hitch be replaced (looks fine other than some scratches)? The plastic female end of the harness is pretty much dust. Don't think that anything is shorting...

Thanks for any input.

Shock damage won't show up until a number of miles later. Our trucks are pretty strong, but if nothing else your hitch should be replaced.
This same thing almost happened to me a few days ago, except I was in the 85 Toyota Tercel, not the Ram. Traffic stopped all of a sudden, I stopped, then noticed the fool in the rear view mirror was looking out the drivers window singing instead of looking where he was going. SCCRREEEEEEEEECCCHHHHH!!!
Unfortunately he was driving a 20 year old tank like car. Fortunately he was able to stop in time.

Gotta watch'em all the time!

"Brady bunch briefcase trick" LOL, i remember that episode. Ditto on write everything down. Make sure you are fairly compensated for the damage to your baby.

I would have a body shop of good reputaition (and of your choice) inspect the truck they can find damage you are not able to detect. I would think that with the Tommy Lift and the hitch there wouldn't be too much visible damage. But think of this something had to absorb the impact I am sure it wasn't the electrical plug or the little shift in the gate so ?????. Have a body shop check it. And as for the notes it is well worth it. I crashed a motorcyle that was booked at 1200. 00 because I had a record of all money spent and Pics of the motorcycle I recieved 2400. 00 for the bike (Totaled). Now as for the owners of the Dog that ran out in front of me they Purchased my 2001 Dodge Ram for me. Oh and because I made notes of my grandson be afraid of me and not comming to me because of the damage to my face, not being able to sleep at night and gathering statements from the dog owners neighbors stating that they never attempted to tie the dog up ever I also got a new home from their insurance. Most of the work was done by me and turned over to my lawyer as he new how to put the info into demanding terms. I realize it was just a tap but do you really know for sure it was just a tap?

Sorry I have a tendency to rattle on. Hmmm must have got that from my Cummins... . LOL

Have the initial and obvious damage replaced, but when you accept the truck DO NOT waive your rights to future latent claims of damage. Accept the as repaired condition only. This is a common ploy with insurance artists to get you to sign away your rights.

It took me a year to develop whiplash symptoms after a rear ender. Luckily, my insurance paid for the rehab as I had signed away my rights by taking cash in lieu.
