2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission rear window removal & replacement

Does anyone know how to remove & replace the rear window glass in a 2000 Dodge quad cab? I need to install a sliding rear window. I have a 96 parts truck with the slider. Is this even possible/practical?

Remove window. . It has been a long time, but as I remember, you need to remove from the inside pushing out. You may need to grab the inner lip of the seal while pushing. Have someone outside to catch the window, or before completing pushing it out, get in the bed an complete pulling it out.



To install slider: install (reuse) rubber gasket onto slider window. Wrap thin, strong twine around the gasket and overlap (crisscross). put a little dish washing liquid to lube. Reinstalling is best with two: One insde with the twine inside and one outside pushing against window. While ouside guy pushes hard, start pulling the string on the inside... it will pull the gasket over the metal window opening.

A 2000 QC backglass is bonded to the body- there is no rubber seal (gasket). Unless you have the proper tools & training, there is a strong possibility of serious injury in attempting to remove the existing glass. If you don't have the proper primers & urethane (& they need to be compatible, i. e. from the same manufacturer) there is a strong probability that the new backglass will not stay adhered to the body. I strongly recommend you find a competent auto glass installer & pay the price to have it done correctly.

Bill is giving you good advice. I broke my back window out on a 99. I watched them replace it and it took a while. They wouldnt let me drive it for an hour after they replaced it to let the glue set good enough as not to seal properly.

I apologize for the bad info... it was my Cub Cab '96 that I installed a slider. I actually have a 2000 OEM Svc Manual, the guys are tight IMO... unless you are real skilled, you should have it done. In fact, Dodge says it is not likely to be able to remove the glass without damaging it.

Thanks for the advice. I really didnt know how it went in, if it was glued like a windshield or had rubber that could be squeezed in and out. I suppose this means that the slider from my '96 parts truck wont fit.

I have done some measuring, at least the best I can with the window glass still in place - they measure close to the same between the 2000 and the 1996 model. Has anyone tried to install a slider from an older truck ('96) into the newer model, and been successful? I can see the newer glass is glued in, but I wonder if the openings are the same size & shape, and once the glue is cleaned off, if the one with the soft rubber will fit in it's place.

Call a glass shop they would be the best source of info. especially if they have some guys that have been doing it a while.

When I restored my last Chevy truck I did all kinds of parts swapping from a hi line into a mid line on trucks 5 years apart but same series.
