A lot of worrying about nothing. Fumoto Valves have been around since 1976. They are proven, and to accidentally have one open up would be almost impossible. Kind of like the Magic Bullet that killed Kennedy. There are testimonials from several of us, who have used Fumoto Valves, for decades, without a hitch, and have never seen of heard of an accidental failure first have. There will always be someone who is scared to try something new, or someone who craps on something they don't or cannot understand. Either try it or don't, your call. There are many models to fit your needs. Personally, the smaller, the more simple, the better.

Every time into a new shop for an oil change I have heard the tech say, “All right, a drain valve!”

I have been using a Fumoto drain valve since my second oil change on my 2008 truck, I installed the valve in mid-summer of 2008. I could not stand the oil bath you get when draining three gallons of oil. when the drain plug is removed. I have been off roading with my truck and never ever had the valve open up. The valve itself extends down approximately a one inch or so, the front axle pumpkin for the differential will be damaged before the valve is ever opened or damaged.

Whenever I drain the oil from the engine, I need to push the lever and then rotate the lever to allow the valve to drain.

I am not saying it couldn't happen, but I would bet that it is at least one in a million odds that the valve will be opened by debris on the forest floor. I bet it is more likely for you to cross thread the drain plug over time than for the valve to open.

I do a lot of off roading with my truck. I don't know how I did it but I found a way to hit a rock and dent my original oil pan so I must be the one in a million. I don't install anything that could possibly get caught up in brush and rocks.
