I just purchased a used 20 gauge 1100 magnum. The barrel says that it is for 3 inch shells only. I assume that I can not use 2 3/4 shells in it.

Is it possible to put a different barresl that uses 2 3/4 inch shells, or is the magnum receiver different and not allow this?

You can safely shoot 2 3/4" shells..... but it may not function the action.

Yep. If you really want another barrel, try looking for an aftermarket. Remington barrels tend to be overpriced for the money... ...

Cabelas, Sportsman's Warehouse, etc, carry several replacements, Remington, Carlson, etc.

Just look around, if you feel you really have to have a replacement.

As for making it cycle with 2 3/4 ammo, just try it. If you clean it good, regularly, you shouldn't have any problems, as long as your ammo will cycle the action.

I have an 1100 that I'm trying to get to function with the cheap wally world low brass.

I got rid of the 3" goose barrel for a 20" 2 3/4" barrel. Still no go.

I cleaned the gas holes with the proper size drill bit.

Any suggestions?

Change the action spring to one from a 2 3/4. I wouldn't reccomend cutting the spring, but you could do that. Or go with a higher velocity ammo, like AATrap or high brass.

I've learned much since I asked this question. The gun is a 1970 remington 1100 20 gauge "standard". Standard guns used the 12 gauge sized receiver and magazine tube. This makes the barrels very very rare and expensive. I read that if you can fit a quarter through the barrel's magazine lug, it's a standard model. Remington didn't start using the smaller receiver until a few years later. There is a guy in Reno who does custom barrel work. He said that he can make something work, so it can have choke tubes and fire steel shot. I just don't know how much it will cost yet.

I seem to recall something about that. Good news is that it ups the value of the shotgun a little... ... That was only for two years, wasn't it?

The guns that were only made for two years had a different piece that fit into the receiver. It was short, like an 870 Barrel. The model number of those escapes me at the moment.

Brownells only lists one spring.

ACTION SPRING - Brownells

They call it a "common part" #@$%!

I've considered shortening it a little at a time until I get 100% function.

It seems my only choice.

After thought on this, I'm presuming you've got new gas o-rings in it and have checked to make sure the pressure rings slide freely... ... considering you drilled the gas ports out, I'm presuming.....

So that leaves you with either making your own, lower-compression spring, or shortening the one you have..... They're not too bad. I'd go 1/2" at a time, IMO. Good luck.

Yep. You said that so I had to go look it up... . It was the Sportsman 12 Auto, a variant of the 1100, made 1985-86. Not valued at very much, but a good shooter.

Anyway, it seems you have an early, 1964-69, 1100 20ga Standard Field. They were only manufactured in the magnum chamber in the 20ga under the "Standard" label with the 12ga reciever those years, and then they went to the Lightweight or Mag 20 designation, with the exception of the Skeet A & B grades. I didn't find a number on the amount produced..... that might require a call to Remington... . They went to the LW-20 reciever in 1970, with 2 3/4" chamber. It appears the 1100 Magnum Duck Gun, 1963-88, was the option for those wanting a 20ga magnum chambering after 1969, until 1977 when the LT-20 MAG was introduced..... according to my books, anyway.

A call to Remington might reveal alternative routes for parts, as well. Good luck!

Yup. The first thing was a new O-ring, then I polished the tube.

I then painted it with self lubricating Duracoat.

This was all of course after swapping out the barrel to the 2 3/4" barrel.

I looked in a Wolff catalog for a reduced power action spring, but no luck.

Guess I'll chop the spring. I do not want to mess with the port sizes. I like to make mods that can easily be removed.
