Replace dually with single wheel

Koa, If you can handle running Swampers, They make a set of 9. 00x16 that a friend of mine put on his Ram Dually and had no problems. They're extremely narrow,9. 00= 228mm wide. They're also 34" tall.

If I was gonna go the single wheel route, I'd have to go with Weld wheels for insurance.

Bart makes a strong truck wheel. They are available in 16. 5" & 15" only. But are very wide. Limited back spacing choices too.

It might be tough to find a tire that will give you the things you are looking for. Plus you would either not use 4 wheel drive or change the front rims too.


The coolest tire & wheel combo I would want to run on a Dooley is below (non towing or hauling). With the correct back spacing & offset, they could be tucked inside the duallys extended quarter panels. 3 problems with this picture. The rims are 15". The tire is a 15" ,Mickey Thomsom Sportsmans are a bias ply tire and they are not even close to the weight ratings you need.

You could email the owner to get the detaled specs.
You wouldn't need that tall of a tire. Nice & wide though. (18") But their on 16. 5" wheels and are a Bias ply. Are they rated for 5540lbs per wheel & tire... Doubtful. #ad

Koa Man, Just a thought, some 18 wheelers with low boy trailers have wheels of 16".
Maybe there is a tire there that would work #ad

I appreciate all the suggestions. I will check out the Cooper tires (don't know if they have them here) and also see about a 9. 00X16. I will also look at the rims and tires on the next low boy I see. I'm thinking I may have to go to a 19. 5 or 20 inch rim to get the weight carrying capacity I require, but those tires will probably be too tall. Don't know if there even make a 16" tire capable of carrying at least 4500 bs. I have the feeling that to obtain a 34 inch tire height and have the weight carrying capacity I need, I may need to run duallys but look into finding a wheel with more off set than what I have to get rid of the clearance problem between the two tires. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know and I'll see if it will work in my situation.

Qtrhrs, yes, my truck is a flatbed. Also installing my stack exhaust this weekend.

A lot of those low boy trailers run 15" rims with a fairly tall side wall. They are rated for trailer use only, but they do have a large weight rating.

You can get 19. 5" tires that are 33" on up. The shortest I know of (commonly available) is a 245/70R19. 5, like on F450, F550, and the 3500HD Chevys.

Hey there Koa Man. Great news. I just got off the phone with interco tire(super swampers) www.intercotire.com and they have developed a 35/10. 5/16 specifically for duallies. They are a 10 ply with a weight rating around the 3500 lb mark. They are the SSR series with the tread siping in the middle blocks for improved wet/winter driving conditions. The fellow I talked to also figured that they would last from 25-35000 miles. Yes, they are a radial and if you need the mud tread like me, they work well in the mud. #ad

On a side note I talked to stockton wheel and they can build a 16. 5 rim in various widths with a 4000lb rating. They retail for $155.

Thanks for the info on the 19. 5 inch wheels that Ford and Chevy uses. I need to look at that and see if one of them would fit the Dodge. Or do you know if they would fit?

Thanks for the info on the Swampers. If I cannot find a single wheel & tire capable of handling a min. of 4500 lbs per side, I will probably stick to duallys and with all the information I have gotten here, I'm sure I can find a "skinny" enough tire, although a "fat" single would be my first choice.

Koaman, Just something you might want to consider. If you run the wider single wheel/tire in the rear, you won't be able to rotate them with the front.

I did take that into consideration. I don't carry a spare around with me anyway. Since almost all med. duty and larger trucks don't carry spares, I figure I can do the same. In the 5 years I have owned this truck, I only had flats twice. Both times truck was sitting in my driveway. On my bigger trucks I call a tire repair service if I get a flat on the road. I would just do the same with the Dodge.

The Ford and Chevys I was referring to use 10 lug rims. I think 245/75R19. 5s are the "entry level" tires with the Ricksons (and probably the Dual Designs as well). While I'm here, I'll throw in my $. 02 on Swampers as well. They are my off road tire of choice. They are also one of the worst highway tires made. While the SSRs are probably a lot better on the road that the bias ply, I wouldn't run them unless you spend a lot of time in the dirt.

Thanks for your input. If the Swampers are not good highway tires, then I'll pass on it. 99% of my driving is highway. Bummers that the Chevy & Ford wheels are 10 lug.

n my truck about two weeks a go. I went with the cooper C120 hiway tread in a 8R19. 5 which is about 34" tall and load range F. #ad
The hiway ride is fantastic! Just like a 7000lb. cadillac. The rickson wheels bolt right up, no adaptors.

What is the weight carrying capacity of your wheel and tire? I did not want to spend a lot of money on fancy wheels for a work truck, but I may go that route. I guess I can always take those wheels off if I ever sell my truck, which I don't foresee doing anytime in the far distant future.
