My truck was shifting really oddly on Friday, like the clutch wouldn't disengage. Got it back to the house but had to work yesterday and just got to take a look at it today. I've got it up on blocks and basically whats happening is when I try and shift into reverse, its grinding and making noise just like the clutch isn't disengaging. If you keep pressure on it eventually it'll go in but not without some racket. When your trying to put it in and it makes the noise, you can leave reverse and come back to any other gear and it slides right in. Occasionally, reverse will go in OK without any problems. On one occasion when it wouldn't go into reverse, I tried coming back to second, and it wouldn't go in there either, it felt sort of locked out. It didn't make the noise like it does when you try to go to reverse, it just didn't want to go in.

At this point I know I'm gonna have to drop it and take it out, but any ideas what I'm looking at replacing? I've got about 130k miles on it and am still on the original clutch so I haven't ever really beaten on it. No fuel boxes or anything have ever been on it either...

I would say you have a clutch problem as opposed to a trans. problem. You could have an issue with the reverse synchro, but that's probably not a sufficient reason to go into the transmission. Shut the engine off when selecting reverse and see what happens- if it goes into gear and works, that would vindicate the transmission.

You can row through all the gears (reverse included) when the motor is off and not under power.

I thought clutch as well and figured that to start with, but it doesn't make sense to me how it can go into all the others with no problem but grind and make so much noise when it comes back to reverse?

It is more likely you have a bad clutch throwout bearing, bad pilot shaft bushing, or bad clutch pressure plate but the 400+ lb. transmission will have to be removed. Transmission R&R with a NV-5600 is not a job for an amateur with a floor jack. It can injure or kill someone if not handled properly.

The 5600 does use a synchronized reverse- however, the lower the gear ratio selected, the more mechanical advantage a dragging clutch or pilot bearing has in a lower gear (particularly reverse) the easier it is to defeat the synchronizer. This is why it is easier to engage 5th or 6th to stop the dragging clutch, and then quickly select first or reverse before the transmission can be brought back to speed by the offending clutch.

Well, that's good news although you're still out the labor to R&R the NV-5600. You might as well put a new clutch and pressure plate in while it's out to save labor at a later date.

my reverse stopped working as well but its got a brand new clutch throw out bearring an pressure plate ...so im not thinkiing my problem is what ya all say . I have absolutly nothing in reverxe its like it doesnt exist .. open to anything at this point

RamTime,

If you were in 1st gear, engine running, how far off of the floorboard does the pedal come up before the truck starts to pull?

And full model details including chassis mileage, and any other clutch or powertrain / clutch related repairs recently?
