Was told by the guy who pumps our septic tank not to use dry laundry soaps or powdered dish detergent. Reason is it contains tiny plastic granules that bounce around in the washing machine to help clean things. These do not break down in the septic tank and will plug up the holes in the drain field pipes.

Okay, but there is no metal in black holding tanks, drain lines and septic tanks.

But, ... . there are vulnerable rubber seals that do break down easily when submitted to corrosive chemicals and powerful detergent soaps. I do know that dish detergents are not be used in tanks due to their overly powerful cleaning abilities, however,I have used them for years with no ill effects. I am not posting this for others to follow my lead and break all the rules in their owner's manual, but I can say that with a good dilution ratio of detergent and water,it will likely mask any problems caused by the soap. The above mentioned 10 gallons of water and small dose of soap is all that's needed. Logistically,I cannot see any difference between dish soap and laundry detergent... when diluted as previously posted before. Unless I'm missing something!!

David... . take some laundry soap and put a tea spoon in a cup of hot water and shake it up... . it will fully dissolve...

If it really had some plastic the sewage treatment plants and all owners of septic systems would yell like crazy, as it would require the replacement of the leach field...

I think you've been led down the garden path... . I'd also assume that there if there was enough of it in the package it would be listed on the label as an additive.....

we build sewer plants large and small, some of the myths are based on old timers in a different world modern detergents does not use grease, the modern problem is the phosphorus used in the detergent and dishwashing liquid causes some extra work in the plants. do not use any bleach at all in the trailer or your house if your on septic. i think he was talking about tri sodium phosphate or tsp neither it , calgon or dish washing liquid will hurt the septic anti aerobic bacteria

I lived in my 5er for 14 months while building a house, just my wife and I, and dumped straight into the septic tank via a 4" standpipe that the plumber added to a tee at the tank opening. We've been in the house now for 12 years and no septic tank problems.

Best thing to use in the Septic tank is BORAX 20 MULE TEAM soap. It is sold in a box in grocery stores.

Mix 2 Cups of detergent and about a quart of warm water shaken up in a container so it dissolves, then fill toilet with water, pour this quart mixture in toilet and flush. . this small amount will keep the tank from smelling.

The use of detergent and 10 gallons sounds like a good Idea. . gonna try that with my borax at the end of our vacation which is where we are right now... Ca. Redwoods.

Dish soap vs Laundry Soap

[I cannot see any difference between dish soap and laundry detergent... when diluted as previously posted before. Unless I'm missing something!![/QUOTE]

The difference is the liquid dish soap will suds up if it gets sloshed around too much making it a PITA to completely rinse out. Laudry soap has non-sudsing agents in it as well as dishwasher soap so you don't end up with your laundry room or kitchen looking like a scene from I Love Lucy.

make sure who ever hooks up to your septic system are using a septic tank friendly toilet addative. some can be harmful to a working system. robert
