Take a close look at the engine and question oil usage. . . at 440k it could still be going strong or it could easily be getting tired. My '96 is definitely tired at 474,000 miles, has quite a bit of blowby and uses a lot of oil.

Just watch all of the Jersey Shore was hit pretty bad with hurricane sandy. I wouldn't be surprised if the truck was flooded.
