Ok... ... ... this is getting serious. What is the solution to the seat bottom collapsing from my 300 lbs setting on it for 164k miles?? I know... ... . lose weight. I have already done the carpet under the seat thing and it helped for awhile. Can a new cushion section be made at a upholstery shop??? Are new cushions available??? Does the 3rd gen seat cushion fit???

Surely others are having this problem also. Oo.

I have been thinking about taking my seats to an upholstery shop to have them rebuilt. IMHO they were marginal when new, and now they suck. Pain in the back and the butt. I almost hate driving my truck any more if im going to be in it for more than an hour or two. :-{}

Have you tried replacing the foam piece under the seat? And checking the springs etc while you're there? I've done that twice now on my 98, and it works pretty well, but the foam just gets old again after a while. Get the highest quality (denser) seat foam and it will work better and last longer. The original TDR article on how to do this suggested 2" thick foam, but some folks (like me) are happier with only 1". I'd guess you'd prefer the 2".

Seat bottoms

Well in the 99 mine saged out before the prescribed 60,000 km's and the 140 lb mech said it was slightly less then new!!!!!!! I was at 210 lbs then for I was getting my tendons pulled from the back of my right *** cheek into the back of my knee. The one company I worked for for 2 plus weeks thier new truck was a 06 dodge 2500 with 2300 Km's on it when I brought it back to the shop the seat was also sagging out. I am about 235 lbs now. I had more foam added but it didn't last long. And I wasn't going to spend $1400 plus a year for a seat so I added 2 towels and it helps!!! :(

The TDR magazine had a write-up on this a couple years ago. It involved taking the lower seat cushion off, replacing the foam and adding a piece of carpet between the springs and the foam to keep the foam from sinking back into the springs, which is what causes the sag. I can find the issue # if you want.

Hey, Jack... . YOU SAID IT!

Try a product called NU-FOAM. It's a spun polyester and it does not wear out like regular foam. I put a 15 by 17 by 2 inch thick piece between the seat foam and spring grid. Really made a difference I got to do both seats after the wife sat in the drivers seat.

When I was going to school in Minnesota I took mine to an upholstery shop in mankato, because the drivers seat had collapsed over the 120,000 miles I had on it at that point and the leather was tearing through also they replaced the middle panel of leather and put all new foam in and the seat looked like brand new and it only cost me $95. I can notice that the seat is starting to flatten out a little after 40,000 miles but it isn't bad yet.

Frank ordered a bunch of them & we did mine today. Boy was that easier than I expected. 4 bolts hold the seat on. What a difference Oo.

Jetson, did you find which tdr issue this was in?

W,

I think the article was on the later models, possibly '98 and up. The seat bottom on them unbolts from the seat frame. On the early models you have to take the entire seat out and then take the springs loose on the bottom to get to the foam. I put a piece of carpet under mine about 75K miles ago and it helped but now the foam is finally giving up.
