Saw this while looking for starter parts. All I thought was... huh. There has to be other circumstances.

It about a cummins diesel 96 12V that starts on its own in a parking lot and smashed into a motel. Has a multitude of electrical problems it looks like. I have seen diesel self start but that was from being in gear on a slope with enough incline to jump it on when it rolled.

Enjoy if you like http://www.rver.com/_equipment/00000014.htm

Definitley eletrical probelm.

With the fuel shut off solenoid (if it was in working order and since the truck shut down at the motel it should of been) in the off position would not start by just rolling down hill in gear.

The truck was most likely having starter solenoid problems with the "no shut down syndrome".

I say problem was located near or at ignition switch maybe a bad starter relay. There had to be a power source to give the starter/fuel shut off solenoid power.

But they fixed the wiring harness?

Plus to get juice to the starter/shut off the clutch would have to be pushed to the floor to give the starter relay a ground.

Somewhere in the wiring harness a hot wire and a gound wire made contact with wires going to starter relay or the starter relay contact points some how made a connection.

I have heard of the fuel shut off solenoid rod staying in the run position.

The truck was moving so I don't think comprensive would cover it but collision should.

It seems someone got rid of it fast.

There was a good one on the NTSB website about a guy's Dodge truck that started in gear and drove off while catching on fire. No one was in it, he was sitting on his porch watching it all. The ignition switch recall came shortly thereafter.
