Service DEF System, See Dealer

My Son Just bought a used 2015 , CTD 2500 4x4 . Any body got this message before? There is no engine light, and no stored messages. It comes on during driving and after a while goes back off by itself.
The truck has 70k kilometres or around 50k miles....

With out a code it's hard to say. I'd run it down to your friendly dealer and have them check it out. If you're lucky it might still be under warranty.

Thanks, I will tell my son to stop in. Just not sure when I had my 2014 these messages kept on popping up and my dealer was never able to find anything wrong....

Also, depending on where your son's truck is located, it could be due to freezing and the message will become a normal occurrence until thawed.

Frozen DEF won’t cause the OP’s message.

Happened on my 2014 and 2016 every winter. Not sure what else it could have been as a drive of 45 minutes or more and it would clear the message automatically.

Kind of makes sense, my 14 only had the issues in winter....but for my son it just came on in the middle of the drive and went back off ( happened 2 times so far) He has about 1.5 hour commute one way when he comes down to help me at work....

I live in Ontario Canada. For my son it might have been -10 Celsius. With my truck it always happened in winter sometimes with minus 10 sometimes at minus 40....
I asked my son and so far it has not come back.....

Sometime it helps to have the latest Software on the Truck, they change settings all the Time to make such senseless Warnings disappear.

I think that is what cured mine. I got probably 6 of those warnings , two of them went into the countdown mode, then just went away , but left a code ,and the check engine light. The first one they just cleared the code, and check engine light. Second one ,different dealer, they checked the DEF because the code was a P207, bad DEF. DEF was okay . I think that was when they did a software update. Shortly after that was the SCR recall, so between the two ,no more warnings .

Hi I have 2016 and was getting same message. No codes or stored message 5 trips to dealer couldn't do anything.I even took a picture of it to prove I wasn't crazy. It finally tripped the light and on the 6th trip it took 10 minutes to fix . When they connected one of exhaust sensors it pushed one of the pins back making an intermittent problem. Easy fix but annoying. Good luck.

Just got the "Service DEF system see dealer" message with no CEL on Saturday. Still had the message on the drive this morning. Truck runs fine otherwise. I have appointment tomorrow so we'll see what happens.

Send a thank you letter to your state reps. The EPA and federal government are ruining our trucks.

Make sure the truck has been "Updated" they removed the ammonia sensor and reprogramed my truck a few years back. Now that I think about it I use to get the same "service DEF system" before the update. I also had the DEF pump blowing the fuse when really cold. The system would turn on the tank and pump heater only to turn it off a few min later. The frozen pump would blow the fuse.

Just got the truck back from the dealer. No codes were found and no updates were needed. They did test the fluid, %33, so that tested OK. They pulled the injector and did a pump and injector test, both checked out good. So for now it's just wait and see if it happens again. At least a paper trail is being created.

just got the same thing yesterday but i also had a battery saver mode message too ,i have a service appointment Friday but it,s 60 miles away and i dont know if i can drive that far or will the limp mode kick in ? do you know how far you can drive with the cel on for the def service.
