First filter is 9um and 2nd is 10um absolute. Nominal doesn't mean crap, go off absolute numbers.
I will say I am very surprised that Dodge went with a 10um or 9um initial filter as that is a lot more restriction than a 20um filter (which is why I went 20um, but will have to look at the OE filter for future changes).
Do you still utilize the stock fuel filter mounted on the engine with the severe duty filtration kit? I have a 2004 which uses the engine mounted transfer pump and filter assembly. I would like to eliminate that complete stock assembly and use a system that is mounted in a more convenient location. Changing a stock fuel filter is easy enough, but cleaning the canister before installing a new filter is nearly impossible.
diesel driver, drain the fuel from the canister then spray carb cleaner with drain open, wipe out the residual and your ready to go. Add to the factory system, or improve, don't remove.
The stock filter is still used. The kit comes with the in tank fuel pump so the engine mounted one is removed, wich if you go back to Dodge they will remove and update to the in tank pump any way. I belive that the wireing for the in tank pump is already in the truck just needs to be hooked up at the engine end. As for cleaning th stock filter housing open the drain and rinse out with clean fuel then wipe. I've never had a porblem doing so. I'd like to update to the 2010 filter housing which like the one on your 04 is serviced from the top. I belive it uses the larger dual stage filter that the 6. 7 engines use for even better filteration.
I just contacted my local Dodge dealer about the Severe Duty Filtration Kit & they told me Chysler is no longer offering these kits... the parts guy did not know the reason.
Se the thread on the 6. 7 engines about "Water in fuel Dealer says I ned new fuel system there is a posting of the service bulliton and all the part numbers. It applies to 05 and newer rams.
Just thought I'd up date this over 8,000 on the kit now I've drained the filters and guess what there was water in it. Not much but moer than I ever drained out of the engine mounted filter. I should also note that the TSB also lists a new vent hose kit for those hose barbs that are on top of the fuel tank. On most of our trucks the cap blows off the 1/4" hose barb and allows water to get into the tank. Hope this helps ... .
Here are the kit part numbers..... For the 5. 9 L with the 34 gal tank--68045253AB... For the 35 gal tank --68045254AA The part number for the fuel tank vent kit is--68061341AA for the 35 gal tank and 68061342AA for the 34 gal tank Hope this helps.
So far the kit's working great. I use to never have any water in the engine mounted filter when I'd drain it when changing it. But the new primary filter under the cab has had some water in it from time to time. Not much maybe two table spoons at the most, but water just the same. Pressure from the tank mounted Lift ump has been a steady 8-10 psi. under normal driving. Under full load I can pull the pressure down to 3-5 psi. but never less than unless the filters are due to be changed. 10,000-15,000 miles seems to be when thats needed.
I never noticed a part number on the wire harness but will look next time I'm under the hood.
I did some filter research and here is what I found.
The filter is a FS19823, its rated at 25um absolute, 15um at 83%, 95% free water and 95% emulsified water separation, for 64 GPH and 30gr dirt holding capacity. It is stratapore media
The problem is the filter isn't stocked by any Cummins store I have called, and they all search their affilaites, so they want you to order a case, which isn't cheap.
What I did find is the FS19732 has the exact same ratings, and is . 39" shorter. Its also stocked by Cummins as its a common filter, so I would say use that number.
Yes I have a fuel pressure gauage, stock the pressure was running around 6-8 psi the fuel pump in the kit seems to have the pressure relief set a slight bit higher. I think that I'd give the stock pump a try and see what pressure you get with the filter installed. If your pressure is ok then you'll have a spare pump...
Thanks. I'll see what I do. I currently have 3 filters on the stock pump with good pressure, and the filter I am going to 25um vs the 20um I have in there now so I don't think i'll see any issues.
The only thing I would do differently now is build some sort of box or shield around the filters as they get a lot of road spray. However, they have never let me down in terms of freezing or leaks since this installation.
I have been following this and similar threads for a year or more. In particular, I have been interested in AH64ID's research into filters and mods to his fuel system. I sprang for the GDP kit, but have been on the fence about the additional water filtration behind the transfer case. I need some clarity.
AD64ID: My understanding is that you now have the additional water filtratration and the stock pump can still deliver adequate fuel to the CP3 with 25, 5 and 2 micron filters sequentially in the flow path? Further, you are now thinking of replacing the 25 micron with all or parts of a Dodge kit so the filter is heated? Do you encounter gelled fuel in the 25 micron?
JStieger: I assume you basically have a work-around of the Dodge kit that provided heat to the remote filter and is less expensive all in all? How long did it take to install and on the 1/10 scal, level of difficulty?
