During my oil change I checked the spin on the turbo and noticed a small amount of play. [. 002/4,guess] Not thrust slop but bearing play. The vanes did not drag on the venturi. Previous checks revealed zero play. Truck has 82k on it. Any suggs? Andby the way I took members advice to tweak idle up to 850 to help my start. It works great, when I get in the truck and think about starting it begins to cook. thanks guys.

Last night I was checking the turbo and got about that and a little more, maybe 0. 005 vertical, and very little in thrust. The numbers you stated seem reasonable.
Are limits for bearing wear available from Holset or are they in the service manual??

A tiny bit of play is OK. The play allows for expansion when the turbo is hot. As long is there is no evidence of scaring or scratching of the blades on the turbine housing things should be ok. Turbine should also be clean and not full of oil. Blades should not have any nicks. Wipe any build up inside turbine with clean dry cloth.

Hope this helps.

That worried me also the first time I looked at mine, but replies to my post about it were very reassuring that a little play was normal and as long as no rubbing took place there was nothing to worry about.

I replaced my HX 35 about a month ago, over the winter I noticed it was pumping oil in the lip of the intake of the charger, one night after test and tune, I pulled out of the shop and there she blew. Mine had no play at all before it went I had checked it that night. When I took it apart every blade had the end sheared off and it had gotten into the housing of the compressor. ????

You might want to check your air cleaner and return line. The two main reasons turbos leak on the intake side are air cleaners and stopped up return lines. Remember something has to make the oil flow in the opposite direction of the air flow. If the air cleaner was causing a restriction then you have a vacuum to suck the oil past the sealing ring. Also the turbo will cavitate causing it to overspeed which will cause the compressor wheel to contact the compressor housing. The number 1 reason we see turbos needing to be rebuilt at our shop is aircleaners. Don't know if this is the case with you but you might want to look at intake system.

Most turbo shafts are supported on pressure-fed plain bearings (usually double concentric) because balls and rollers don't last at 100,000rpm. So there is a lot of radial run-out to allow for two oil films.
Don't worry.
