So I am in the hunt for a new truck and obviously I will be getting another Dodge Cummins, but I am having trouble deciding which one to get. Should I wait for the 6. 7L that comes out in January or just go with a '07 with the 5. 9L right now since they should have quite a lot of the problematic bugs(computer or what not) worked out of them by now?? Not saying the new 5. 9L have tons of computer issues or anything but that is one of the things that worries me about the new 6. 7L, is the computer or engine related issues that could come about it being a brand new production diesel.

Let me know what you guys think cuz since the transfer case in my 12v broke 6 weeks ago, this riding my bike to work and borrowing the wife's car every now and then is getting tiring and ridiculous. I have money to fix the 12v but I would rather put it away as a toy at this point in my life and get a newer, more reliable truck.

Thanks, Joe

I just bought an 06. The new engine looks great, but didn't want to hassle with the extra emissions stuff...

My $. 02 worth,

I think you're running a risk with a new engine. You might have it into the dealer more than you might expect for updates, recall crap and whatever else. Just my take.

I'm in the same boat. 2006 (get the rebates)? 2007 (newer model year)? 2007. 5 (bigger, stronger??? engine and WAY COOL 6 SPD AUTO transmission)??

I must buy a new truck soon. I think the 6. 7 will be reliable enough; it's a Cummins, aint it? Actually what causes me concern isn't the new motor's reliability, it's the fuel economy that it will/won't get. I just don't think that a larger displacement engine that ingests more inert gases (EGR) will be more efficient than the current engine. Fuel economy is a concern for me, and I think I'll have to wait on the 6. 7 to prove itself from a fuel economy perspective. Another thing that makes this decision very difficult is the new 6 speed 68RFE transmission that will be mated to the 6. 7. (The 6 speed Aisin will be used in the Chassis Cab models only). I really want that new 6 speed, but again, not bad enough to 1) wait for January, and 2) take my chances on a lower MPG truck.

So... .

I'm trying to buy a "new" 2006 as we speak... er... . type... .

Assuming that you are buying an auto trans, then the real question is the current 48RE or the new 68RFE. I'm sure that either engine will do just fine.

I would and just DID opt for the 06. Proven Cummin's platform and missing all the emmisions stuff like the 6. 7L will have. Prices are better and with the rebate for me it was case closed... I wish mine was a 6 speed, but oh well. Truck drives like a dream...

You'd have to be a fool to purchase a 1st year anything. And don't think because it is a Cummins engine it wound have major problems. Just the idea of an EGR is bad enough let alone that multi-thousand $$$ exhause system.

Buy now ... don't wait.

The transmission would scare me more than the engine. That engine has been around for a while in other applications.

I'm pretty sure the trany will be a good unit, Aisin tranys have been used behind the 4. 0 in XJs since the 4. 0 was released and they are known forbeing bulet proof and 200k to 250k is normal, Now i know its not the same but thier quality is there.

Still not sure what the deal is on the transmission for the pickup's being built after 01/07? is it the Aisin or a updated 48RE now called the 68RFE? if so who makes it DC?

thanks... ...

No, the Dodge truck 6. 7 (which is all-new and not on the market yet) is not the same engine as the Euro 6. 7, which has been out for a couple years (which is a stroked 5. 9). The Ram 6. 7 has a larger bore and shorter stroke (thank goodness) than the Euro 6. 7. We'll get to be the guinea pigs for this new, virtually untested engine. But I'm confident Cummins will "get it right" since they have a lot of experience in cooled EGR and Fleetguard is ahead of the curve in particulate trap technology and such.

Here's a thought (and hope): since EGR is coming, it's possible they will do away with the 3rd injection event. Crossing my fingers anyway!

Just picked up my '06 in July. My 97 was getting tired and the price was great with the reduced pricing. It was actually less than my 97 was. I wanted to get one before the new model was my only choice. New stuff always has a learning curve and I didn't want to spend my time at the dealer. Sure is a big improvement over the old reliable '97. Guess it's personal preference whether to go to the newest and latest technology or stay with the tried and proven existing model. Best of luck on your decision.

I think you are right, but not in that way. It will likely be replaced with 5 or 7 injection events. The emissions are that strict. And it will take piezo injectors to be that fast. At least the ford is going piezo.

The Aisin AS68RC is only used in the chassis-cab trucks.

The Mopar 68RFE is the big brother to the 545RFE used with the Hemi - it shares nothing with the 48RE.

Something no one has mentioned is that starting with the 07, you will be required to have emission testing every two years.

Just got my fourwheeler mag yesterday and they have a picture of the new 6. 7 in a ram. All I can say is :--) :{ :{ The engine compartment is a complete and total mess. It looks like any chevy or ford, there is stuff everywhere. I was not impressed at all.

I would get an 06 with the 5. 9

Time will tell with the new 6. 7L. Personally I'm not to happy with all the egr crap. I'm sure the aftermarket will work their magic on it and make it more powerful and hopefully more efficient. They did it with gassers, they'll do it with the Cummins. As long as someone has the money and wants the power, the mods will come. Didn't know about the 2 year testing though... . that would suck.

Man, I think my decision is made. Sounds like the 5. 9L is the way to go since it has no EGR and other emissions components like the 6. 7L is going to have.

Thanks for the advice guys, you definately helped me out in my decision and I think with the pricing right now and the few issues that the 5. 9L has, it is the way to go. I definately believe I would be spending more time at the dealer with problems with the new engine/truck. Guess I will get the 5. 9L and wait another 10 years until the new 6. 7L is problem free. :D

New truck, here I come!! Oo. :D

Joe

If you are interested in ever cranking up the power then go with the 5. 9. The egr and exhaust filter will just be expensive problems.
