i got my transmission out to replace the rear main and i found out i need a clutch as well. while the truck is apart should i weld the 5th gear nut. there are problems with the transmission, i just dont want to pull this thing out again any time soon. does anyone have a picture of the fifth gear nut that causes so many problems. also, how much horsepower will the stock clutch hold.

Not advised to weld. It has been done, but it crystallizes the shaft and makes it weaker. Its recommended to replace the shaft with a full spline shaft from Standard Transmission, and gear and nut. They have the best price on the gear oil also.

just my penny's worth.

A good little trick is to dimple the nut right at the keyway when it is tightened up all the way. The dimple will not allow the nut to back off until you take it out yourself.

Like MLee said. Get the fully splined main shaft and "stake" the supplied nut. This was the only way I could keep 5th on. (lost it eleven times)

I'm planning to go with the fully splined 5th gear upgrade when I finally pull my transmission for a clutch job. Will probably give the transmission a refreshing with new synchros and such since it's never been opened up. 367k without any 5th gear problem has to be doing pretty good ;)
