5er hitch install

I feel rather silly asking this... but I got my truck for 2 main purposes and 1 minor one. The main purposes are . . it's a truck and for a family vehicle... the minor being some offroad fun now and again.

The family aspect of the truck is perfect... but I have nothing to really haul or tow as of yet(getting a travel trailer in the next year)... the truck is approaching 3,500 miles and I have yet to make it WORK at all... and I want to do so. Partially just to see how my truck does and to practice as I've never towed anything bigger than a 14' john-boat behind a small truck. Also to get the truck working!

Does anyone have any suggestions for hooking something up and putting some miles on it? I'm in central Florida and I'd love to hook something up... drive to Atlanta and back for a good 1,000 mile work day for the truck.

Please don;t laugh as this is my first 'real' truck and I want to USE it for it's true purpose.

Towing

About the only thing I would suggest is offering to pull a friends TT for them if your wanting to tow for break in. I have a 28. 4 ft TT weighing around 5500 lbs loaded I pull but, have not pulled in awhile (wife had a wreck last March and we only got to go a couple of times camping last year). I also have A 16 ft flatbed. there again if you could borrow one and load it down for some tow time. Other wise if this is not possible take your truck out every so often and run it some. I don't mean abuse it but, kinda blow the soot out of it warm it up good. The first few times I towed my travel trailer I used 3rd gear towing putting the RPM's up around 2600 to 2700 RPM. :D XJSuperman: I forgot to add that TT is For Sale Hint, Hint. :-laf

Tony T has the best idea. If you were thinking about hauling something and getting paid for it this is considered commercial trucking, and is not feasible for a one time thing.

Not really looking to get paid... I have a friend with a used car lot and a 3 car trailer BUT it's a gooseneck and I am not equipped as such. I also know of someone who hauls a lot of hay but all his trailers are goosenecks as well.

I appreciate the suggestions... and I do get the truck on the interstate about twice a week and run it (not abusively) hard for a few miles.

XJ,

Do you belong to the Ocala Jeep Club? There must me some members there with flatbeds--you could borrow one and go load it up with building materials (or your XJ?) and put some miles on.

Go rent a RV Trailer There are alot around

Once I rented a 20' TT that was 5000# and gave me an idea on what it was able to do and such. Take a weekend and have fun with it. Get in on the "Trailer" crowd.

I now have a 28' TT toybox that has a quad in the back. Weighs 11,500# so I am at 20,000 hooked up..... STILL... can go UP a 8% yes ... . 8% at 45 mph. Here in Utah... . a 6%? 60 Easy.

I'd second that rent a trailer, a heavy trailer. Find a long hill, do they have hills in FL? I wouldn't buzz it up to 2600 rpm though, 2100 works good for breaking in the ISB's.
