On my 99 with 230k miles, I have noticed a slight miss only at idle, (has been intermittent for probably last 75k miles) with any load it clears up (even just the A/C compressor kicking in). The miss is not common at lower elevations (currently at 1200') but is more noticeable at higher elevations (our place in CO is at 7200') but it is still pretty slight, you can hear it, and just barely feel it, doesn't rock the truck or anything like that. It shows up the worst after a hard fast run, like running down I-25 from Cheyenne to Fort Collins at 75-80mph and jumping off the interstate to stop at a red light. I figured with 230k miles I would change the injectors out to 275s but haven't gotten it done yet. The motor has done this for a couple years now, before you only noticed it at really high elevations (>7500') and I just attributed it to the elevation but it has started to do it more at the lower elevations also. The head gasket was leaking and was replaced about 75k ago (miss was present prior and post head gasket leak)

Also the motor doesn't always like to start up in its usual barely bump the starter fashion if it is hot when shut down (only started this in the last 25k miles or so), only notice it when it is hot both outside and been running down the road for a while... such as pulling a 24' GN stock trailer down the highway in 95 degree weather. She always has started back up, but will take up to 7-10 seconds at her worst...

I always try to give adequate cool down time, wait until EGTs are below 300.

Gone through 3 or 4 LPs in last 100k miles, and FP stays around 12-15psi, maybe drops to 11 @ WOT.

The truck will smoke pretty good on a cold startup if outside temp is below 40, especially if it was below 30 while parked overnight. nice stream or white smoke until she gets warmed up. Under normal operating conditions no abnormal smoke that I can tell, if you take her to WOT up an on-ramp there will be a stream of black smoke, but not anything I would call excessive.

Now for the part that confuses me a little :confused:

I started running the synpower fuel additive, when I would remember to use the product, the motor would start right up every time, within one second or so... but the miss got more frequent, not more noticeable just more frequent. Not sure what the connection is.

I am trying to pile up the $ to buy the 275 injectors and an exhaust brake, and am hoping I am not needing to dig deeper into the wallet than that...

I was going to try loosening up individual injector lines to see if i could ID a bad injector, but it only seems to show the signs in places where this would not be appropriate... never at home.

I have checked for codes, only overboost was present when I bought the truck at 80k miles, and since then only CEL from a bad crank sensor.

Hoping to get her running right pretty quick, have 12 horses and a lot of stuff to move from CA to CO in the next week or two... Oo.

Thats something that is in my mind also, I figured if it was raising the white flag it would have done it within the last 100k miles or so the miss had been there... but I guess the hard start is something of a more recent backwards slide...

I have seen original vp 44 and lift pump at 377000 miles, but it was not running:-laf it was staggering. I would not treat any of my machines that cruelly

Bob

what kind of fuel pressure do have if you have more 5 or 6 psi at start up than you could crack the diaghram in the vp44 and cause it not to start try turning the key on wait about between 10 or 20 seconds after the wait to start light goes off and try to start then if it starts everytime like that than that is your problem on that side of it and my 99 has slight miss to it after i put a used set of supermental injectors in it on a new new injection pump

The FP jumps up to 12-15psi when LP makes that initial 1 or 2 second spin after ignition goes to run, then it trails down to 0 pretty quick, so FP is at 0 by the time ignition is turned to start.

VP it was

Just thought I would put the final outcome on here to finish out this thread:

VP died in June, pulling a 24' stock trailer with 7 horses in it through NV at 1AM. One minute running down the interstate at 70, next minute motor shuts down not to run again (until new VP). Made for loads of fun #@$%! ... shoulda just replaced it when it showed signs of throwing in the towel... :-{}

LOL that is a fact... the part that was handy, and made for more cussin was that my wife was driving the 2000 with a 20' trailer and 5 more in it... and of course the 99 broke down nowhere near a town... wound up taking the 2000 to the nearest town, dropping the loaded trailer at the flying J, going back and unhooking the dead truck from its trailer then pulling that trailer to the flying j (later to local rodeo grounds to unload [twice of course]) would have cost $500 to have the whole rig towed... truck alone was only $150. Was a long night thats for sure... of course the starter solenoid contacts went out on the 2000 as I started it up to load and leave... so didnt turn that one off for nearly 2 days. Boy were our horses grumpy by the time we got them all unloaded for a rest... nearly 20 hours.
