Took my '01 to the dealer (600 miles) for realignment to correct for a slight pull to the right. After a whole day, they are ordering a new steering box!! On one hand, I can't beleive it needs a new box, and on the other hand, they said they have seen this on another truck before and once they found the alignment was dead-on straight, they decided not to monkey around witht the steering box - they'll just replace it. I guess this is "good service", eh?

So next week or so they'll have the part. I'll post results then.

Don't know if it was good service or just a case of a dealer making some quick dollars on D/C. Did you or the dealer check the tire pressure in the front tires??

The ol' 95 awhile back was pulling BAD to the right. Of course, since warranty is long gone, I was able to take it to a shop that knows what they're doing #ad
Got it aligned and fixed up. The guy told me, it didn't look too bad on the machine, but when he took it out for a drive, it was like #ad
Anyway, he said he basically adjusted until he got the pull out of it. Tires wear fine. I love not having to go to the dealer. Being my own warranty station isn't necessarily a bad thing #ad

Steering boxes do not cause pulls right or left, only wander and vague/sloppy steering response. Dealer is making bucks cause the box is easy to replace. Brakes, alignment or shocks/steering stabilizer (in the case of bump steer or groove steer)is where they should be looking imo...

I tried many times to get the service advisor to explain to me how a bad steering box would make the truck pull. I told him the steering felt great (tight, no wander etc. . ) I'm a little worried it'll get worse. He was rambling about something like the box thinks it is receiving pressure direcing it to turn right... . "the steering just doesn't feel normal. "

They did check tire pressure in the front - it was the same on both sides.

Something just occured to me... I just came back from a 600 mile road trip (Vegas!) and noticed a little more brake dust on the right wheel than on the left... this could explain the pull to the right, right? Could there be a slightly greater pressure on the right front brake?
Advice?

I took my new 2001 3500 QC 4x4 in yesterday for steering wander. It only has 1200 miles and the steering wandered since I first picked it up. I haven't heard back from the service dept yet, should know something tomorrow. I bet they replace the steering box, it sounds like the easy way out for the dealers. I hope that solves the problem.

We took my dad's 2001 in for the steering wander problem one week after buying the truck. Had about 400 miles on it and they had a steering gearbox in stock and installed it right then. It has helped tighten up the steering quite a bit. Before it was pretty scary driving next to these damn concrete walls they put in the lanes when they're doing road construction.
