NV271 transfer case rebuilding suggestions

You may be lucky enough not to have a worn out hunk of junk like we have had to deal with. Replaced the G56 with NV5600 and the SB with a Valair quiet. Oh my!!! That clutch with new hydraulics and an updated NV5600 is so nice to drive compared the worn out g56. Probably not a fair comparison but sure like the gear splits in the NV over the G56.

Shoot fire! That’s $4000.00 for a reman and the new clutch kit! My G56 only has 122K miles on it - same as the truck. I think I’m going to ride with it a bit longer.

Just curious, it should be a direct bolt up correct? Or...does it take some more cash to make it fit.

Yeah, will have close to $6k with all new parts, starter spacer, drive shaft mods, etc. The G56 we replaced had 3 times the mileage, a poor attempt at a rebuild, wrong clutch fork, and bad hydraulics. It all bolts up, just need the right clutch and flywheel plus a start spacer and drive shaft mods as the NV is 2.5" longer than the G56. With the slightly taller OD of the NV, the original was the AE, and the 34" tires we should be about dead on for normal towing speed and rpms, just under 2k at just under 75 mph.

@Silver Tex
I spoke to a guy on Friday who recommends SB hydraulics with Valair clutches. Overall, I am pleased with the Valair kit rated for 450HP on my truck (installed 3/2020) after a season of towing...

That’s interesting White. Are you running the upgraded hydraulics with your Valair kit? If so, what say you about the hydraulics? Is it the quiet organic, dual disk?

Also, to close the loop on some commentary earlier in the thread. I now have the Smarty set on 3 with all other settings at stock. John, this is working well now that I am driving it the way it’s intended. Cerb, I was wrong about my bottom shift RPM point, it is in the 1700-1800 RPM range - unless I’m taking a short vacation between gears. It’s all good now and can virtually eliminate the rattle. It also is helping me build driving habits for when I dump the dual mass flywheel setup.

Lastly and so I don’t break the rule so the forum, I’ll asking about rear sway bars under the 3rd Gen, no engine or trans area. Always appreciate the feedback.
Still monitoring the feedback on this thread.
Good stuff...

I didnt even know that I needed this lesson on driving my G56 lol . But my new 07 I just recently purchased has the G56 with a SBC which is kinda crazy since I drive my Dump truck with a 10 spd Road Ranger and then relax on the drive home with the G56 HaHa . Not sure if I'm hurting my Drivetrain but I skip gears, I start in 2nd wind it up to 25/2800 then go to 4th same RPMs then 6th ? and after 3 months I'm still looking for a 7th gear lol. I dont like lugging my Big Cam 350 on my work truck, but not sure if I'm hurting my 5.9 ? I do have the SBC in this new truck just not sure if it's the dual disk? Great Discusion guys.:)

Hey W,
Not sure I have an answer or can answer the gear skipping question. I enjoy the shift now that it is so smooth.

General followup after 1200 miles on the new clutch paired with the Touch.

I really like the Valair Quiet DD. There are some times that it ratttles a little bit at idle, but that is far and few between.
I don’t have any issues backing up. My shift points are now between 2600-2800 RPM. I previously had a rattle, which I attributed to and was corroborated to some degree to a failing dual mass, that is completely gone. The truck accelerates so smoothly now, I sometimes hit the alarm point I have set on my Smarty Touch before I realize where I am in the RPM range.

I do have to be a little careful with exhaust brake on if my slow shifting tendency is too slow, or it’ll come on mid shift. I usually avoid that with a little tap on accelerator between gears and it just slides into the next gear and transition is very smooth. Oh and it pulls like none other.

With the Touch set on 3, I got a hand calc’d 10.9 MPG through Denver and up into Colorado Springs. We will be making a pull up into S.Dak. In July so we’ll see how the mileage fairs in the wind on that pull.

Take care all and enjoy the 4th. I’m going to take a moment to be mindful of what it stands for.
Scott.
