I was wrong about the OBD2 check. I guess I didn't see him plug in.

Yeah, that's what's different from my last test 11/13. We have a "flexible" smog guy here that's not going to be as flexible anymore.
I guess I'd better drive the truck stock for awhile before my next check in November.
I would imagine the CARB diagnostics will get so sophisticated that they'll be able to go way back in your ECM's memory.

Maybe some of the Factory boys that work on these rascals everyday can elaborate further. I have been told that when EVER one of the Programmers has EVER been plugged into your trucks system that it will leave some kind of Footprint on the ECU of the truck, even if its been deactivated and removed so the factory can tell that the reason two of the piston rods are hanging out the holes in the block and your piston tops have had a Meltdown on the tops of them.

It seems to me that factory safeguards would be put in place. So that when a guy adds MORE Hp than needed they aren't held libel

I wonder why they are plugging into OBD2 port. When I had my 2010 CTD smogged it was a visual for equipment and a visual for smoke. They didn't even put on the dyno as they do my gas powered vehicles. I live in SoCal.

Wanted to make sure you weren't throwing a code by munipulating the light .

They didn't plug into my 6.7 when I had it smogged in Riverside county. It is supposed to be a visual check for all the smog equipment that is supposed to be there for your year vehicle and the jab the throttle a few times to make sure there is not excessive smoke. Not even an opacity just their judgement! I felt ripped off after being charged $70 after I saw what the diesel smog consisted of.

My cost was 50.00 part of that goes to the state

I do not know what to tell you "tigerdrvr". Mine is an '04. Stock Stock Stock. California does not smog new vehicles for the first 5 or so years. My last one was October '13. I will have to have it done this year. The station I go to is a smog and European repair shop. I believe he does plug into the truck and looks with a flashlight under the truck to look for the cat and whatever else is supposed to be there. He can then transfer the data to Sacramento and within one hour I can go online and pay my renewal. Yes, it costs roughly $60.00 every two years. If "tigerdrvr" wants to call me, I'm in the phone book for Brentwood.

Unless there's a change in party,I would expect 50 state smog laws.
The EPA has a way of getting their way. States don't have the resources to contest their regulations.
Hang on to your emission equipment folks.

Only if the states require more then the Feds . Such as Volkswagen diesel couldn't come into Cali due to not meeting Cali's smog laws .........

Don't feel bad ive never seen one of these trucks get 26 MPG either!!! ;)

PS: Besides Mine :-laf

OK...so I guess the on board computer mileage isn't really accurate...I'll check back when I do an actual gallons-in-miles-driven calculation. Whatever the case may be, the truck is more efficient than I imagined. Might be because it is stock, 2WD and a 50 state tune (not CA). btw, the on board calculator showed 27.3mpg on a recent drive down to San Jose and back in light traffic, averaging 71mph. :)

Then they broke their own operational rules being lazy. Computer check for DTC's is part of the process, fail if anything is set.

Not quite true. Dictates from the Federal level will just result in reductions in other areas if not met. Witness the 55 mph speed limit, lots of states held out util the lack of Federal hiway funds became too much of a burden. Same thing will happen if it is decided ALL states will smog check. The hue and cry when federal funds are lost drowns ANY reasonable response to Feds dictating to states, it will happen sooner or later.

If that truck is getting 27+ MPG, it is the only one in the country that is. The "on-board-calculator" is better known as the "lie-o-meter". My 04 is all over the board, but when I do it hand calculated it is anywhere between 1-4 lower, depending whether I am towing or driving empty. The newer trucks are getting more accurate numbers from what I am hearing. That 27.3 is probably more like very low 20's. When you hand calculate it you will be surprised.

Makes sense. I expected somewhere around 16-17mpg towing the 2500lb race car on an 1800lb trailer, so when I saw "21.1" I had a hard time believing. The "27.3" was at a very controlled 70-72mph on flat terrain...which I'll never see for a full tank (only place I'm likely to be on flats that long is I5 or across Nevada and I'm sure as hell not going to be going 70-72mph :)

I'm going to the dealer this afternoon for the ECM flash, wish me luck, I really need to get this smog situation wrapped up.

Perhaps there are different procedures for vehicles already registered in CA and "out-of-state" vehicles being presented for the first time.

Thinking back to when I registered my Dave Smith truck. Everything was in order until inspection time to match vins with paperwork. The DMV employee was 1/2 hour late. A month later I get a notice from the DMV that my vin plate didn't line up with my paperwork! This was after their employee verified it. This time I use AAA as the vehicle's used now and they intervened for me.
Smog notice comes and when I bring it in the vin shows up as a 6.7 auto! The smog guy passes me but AAA to the rescue again with more documentation.
AAA would like to take on more functions but the employee union fights it. Dang.

Not good news: The dealer did a reflash, I drove the truck about 60 miles at freeway speed and only 2 out of 3 monitors are showing "ready" (the Misfire monitor is showing up as Not Ready). Given the cleared all codes as part of the reflash, it may be that I need to go through a few more service cycles to reset the Misfire monitor, I guess.

Not happy. The thing that really pisses me off is that if I had done all this a month or so ago, I'd only have needed 2 out of 3, according to the tech. I've lived in CA my whole life, but I'm about ready to bail on the state...the amount of regulation and red tape is beyond ridiculous. No, I'm not a happy camper at the moment.

tigerdrvr message me with a email address . I have a letter from Dodge because the truck is a Cali truck that has been extended to lifetime coverage on the ECM due to the exact problem you are having. I want to get a copy of this to you .
