So which antifreeze are you using, & poll

Well I still haven't done it yet, thats change my anti freeze. Iv just been to busy and haven't had time to do any more research on which type to use, so I'm going to let TDR members make my mind up for me. I want to know what type of antifreeze are you using.

Caterpillar straight antifreeze.

Caterpillar 50/50

Fleet charge straight antifreeze

Fleet charge 50/50

Here it is let me know what you use and then my mind will be made up and then this week end I will change it.

Thought about it for a long time finally went with same green stuff I used for 40 years prestone. Works for me.

I have used the Cat ELC in both of my Rams, just because it is pre-mixed, has no silica, does not promote electrolosis ( which we don't have to worry about anyway), and it is the same cost as other brands of anti-freeze. I'm sure that I was told it will last xxx,xxx miles, then you need to only add a bottle of rejuvinater and you are good to go again. By that time, you might as well change hoses, thermostat, etc. anyway.

I use Zerex and change it every 24,000 miles - I've got 170,000 miles on my '93 and the radiator looks as good as the day I bought the truck new.

The Green Stuff

Using "PEAK Ready Use" 50/50 Pre-diluted since it's also a virgin low silicate formula which is recommended for our Rams



Available at Checker/Kragen for about $5 a gallon. Change every year since the stuff is cheap and Lake Havasu City has an antifreeze recycling program every March.

I am useing Texaco Anti-Freezze and Coolant. Low silicate and is under $5 a gallon. Change it every 2 year's.

I use fleet with 50/50 mix. I wouldn't run straight coolant... doesn't cool as well as the mix and is a little harder on the water pump.

Texaco Dex-cool, the pretty orange stuff, even the new rams come out with it. If your going to use it make sure you get all the green stuff out or it renders the long life useless, it will only operate the same as the green stuff.



The long life is kind of mute to me anyhow because I change every two years or 30,000 miles which ever comes first.

My feeling on the subject is that almost ALL of the brand name anti-freezes are okay. To me, it's mostly a question of how often do you want to change it.



I'm using the Caterpillar Extended Life because that's the brand that I could find the extender for. Using the extender allows me to go six years before I have to change coolant.



Other TDR members obviously prefer to have a look at their systems sooner than that. Many members will change hoses before that time, so they might as well change the coolant at the same time. That philosophy works for them, and I can't fault it.



I just don't want to have to change coolant that often.

if you use Dex-Cool there two very important things to remember. Number 1 don't let it get low - keep your overflow bottle at the proper levels. This stuff can gel when air gets into a closed system and is almost impossible to clean up once that happens. The money you think you have saved by using it will be gone in a hurry. Number 2 don't use a flip lever radiator cap with it.

I have been using the Fleetguard Compleat pre-mixed stuff, although I think the type I'm using is PG (propolene glycol) instead of the EG stuff. Could be wrong though...



I have been changing it every 25 - 30K miles. Am just now hitting 70K miles on the engine. Planning to change coolant, upper & lower hoses, water pump, serpentine belt and thermostat at the 100K mark, just for added piece of mind.

Has anyone actually seen it in gel form or is it just a rumor.



I guess I could take some and put it in a bowl and whip it with a blender to see if there is maybe some credibility to the stories we hear, although I don't know if that would be the correct procedure and maybe add some unknown variable into the equation that would distort the outcome.

Shell Rotella ELC Red coolant. Supposedly good for 500K is checked regularly. Premixed and is as good as anything else I suppose. I like it cause its red and not green. For some reason I cant stand looking at green antifreeze. I've had too many messy experiences with the stuff... like practically getting drown by it. I hate antifreeze in general.

Actually the new Rams have something a little different than dex-cool in them (even though it may be orange), they use HOAT (hybrid organic acid technology) and dex-cool is OAT. Don't ask me I don't know what the difference is exactly, but I am using the Zerex G-05 (HOAT) in my truck that is being used in the new rams. Follow this link for more information.

I found this on the Zerex web site also, check your manual it says below not to use Dex-cool.

Can you use an extended life coolant in a Ford and Chrysler vehicle?



Both the Ford and Chrysler owners’ manuals do not recommend using unapproved extended life products such as DEX-COOL or equivalents in their vehicles and state that improper maintenance may invalidate the warranty of the cooling system. In addition, many vehicles are not designed for DEX-COOL or equivalent organic acid, extended life coolants. For example DaimlerChrysler is reported to have experienced solder corrosion issues in heater cores with some DEX-COOL type fluids.
