Want to switch to Evans NPG+, but do I have coolant problems?

Well at least reading this Shell publication makes me feel a little better using the Rotella ELC. Says it protects aluminum and solder among other metals. Also says its compatible with Cat ELC... which must mean they share the same properties. It wont gel in use or storage and is good in the bottle for 8 years.

Antifreeze is toxic to the environment in a big way and it is hard to deal with the amount of water/antifreeze that you use when you flush your truck. I live in the country and don't want any run off getting into my well water. I take it to the Dealer and pay them to do a flush and fill based on the owners manual. Cheap and easy. I've never had a cooling system problem with any vehicle I have ever owned. Plus all of the antifreeze that is sold in the USA is made in one factory, then they add the colors based on the distributors preference.

Funny thing was I once, not too long ago, took 10 gallons of coolant to the local Ford Dealer for disposal. They looked at me like I was insane and said "just pour it down the drain in the street... its biodegradeable". I just went  and left. I took it to a private mechanic shop and he let me put it in his waste tank for antifreeze.

Antifreeze

I just bought my antifreeze from my local john deere dealer which is premixed and has a conditioner and an addiative mixed in to help stop electrolysis. 6 gallon cost me$37. 99. Oo.

HOAT COOLANT

Don't ask me I don't know what the difference is exactly, but I am using the Zerex G-05 (HOAT) in my truck that is being used in the new rams. Follow this link for more information.

Zerex G-05

I found this on the Zerex web site also, check your manual it says below not to use Dex-cool.

Hope this may help someone!

Thanks for the good information Tim. I have been reading about the importance of useing Anti Freeze with H. O. A. T. in our 3rd generation Rams in the 03 service manual but have not been able to find it at local parts stores and did not know which brand had the HOAT. Always used Peak for years as it is the brand most all the trucking company's use in the big rigs, but will now get the Zerex G-05.

Thanks, Kuzz

About the only cooling system maintenance I really do on my vehicles is add Redline Water Wetter. The stuff just plain works. It prevents corrosion and increases the heat transfer efficiency, which means the engine has more effective cooling, but also the heater works faster in the cold. THe water wetter is really a great product.

As for the actual coolant, I tend to just stick with the Prestone or Zerex EG coolants. I do not trust ELC yet. Besides, the REGULAR coolant lasts 2 years!! Why is it that people don't mind changing the oil every 5K, but some will moan and complain about doing the coolant once every two years? I know coolant is a PITA, but it's not that bad.

I would recommend you each look into the Water Wetter. IT was designed primarily to inhibit corrosion. They just lucked out when they found out that it lowered operating temp by about 25°.

Hmmm. the folks at Redline told me that the Wetter Water was primarliy for racing applications. Because, water is a better coolant than EG or PG and when you wreck and wet down the track, water with Wetter Water in it is not nearly as slick and much easier to dry than EG or PG. Just adding my . 02.

BTW, I don't doubt that it may well be worth using in a street application, but I seem to remember them also saying that it really does not help coolant, other than water, work better.

I'm using the Fleetguard ES Complete EG premix stuff. I like the idea that I don't have to mix it and it is good or 600,000 or 12,000 hours. ;) Course we will change it out evry 50,000 along with the thermostate and be happy. ;) :D

Rotella ELC premixed. I put it in at about 50,000 and have 105,000 on the engine now. Water pump bushing and seals went yesterday. Don't know if that is related to the Rotella but I kinda doubt it.
