Some People ?

We stopped at the cold storage/meat processor that we bring our raised and wild game into to be processed to pick up some meat that we store there. The wife worked there when she was young and knows the folks as if they were family. When the young man that takes the game some OLD CRAZY GUY and his NEPHEW bring in at the wee hours of the morning brought out the box of meat said, that Elk roast on top there would be a meal fit for a King!!. The wife reached in and gave it to him and his parents they said you dont have to do that, I think getting up that early like he does counts for something most times they give us the key to the door to drop it off but he gets up and helps unload anyway. During the season they work their butts off not leaving much time for hunting.

A young High School gal was standing there all done up in her FFA garb said I wouldn't eat the meat of a Elk that there are animals raised just for that purpose and it was cruel. I tried to explain my point of view to no avail you cant please everybody!!

We seen the folks that own the processing shop at a town meeting and they gave me this article that they also gave the FFA gal. She read it and didn't say to much but looked as thou she just had a light turn on in that head of hers. Its funny how some think I just thought some of you would find it a good read.

Big,
Good article, it's nice to see well written opinions on the benefits of wild game. I couldn't agree more. My only problem is how he portrays modern agriculture. You can be pro-wild game and not bash other industries. Shoot, I have no problems with vegetarians (hint, they LOVE soybeans) as long as they don't knock hunting, fishing, and animal agriculture.
Thanks again,
Andrew

BIG, we traveled to the wifes families last summer in Levittown, PA. Very populated place, nothing but asp:hault, concrete, and shopping plazas. They have a very different outlook on life thats for sure. They have never been to our neck of the woods, and we were discussing the differences between here and there. They literally live within 15 minutes of 3 large malls. When I told them we have to travel an hour to get to the closest mall, they were shell shocked  "you guys must spend alot of time driving" they said. Nope, we just dont go shopping ;). We have a local grocer and small time shops (hardware, auto parts, etc) and thats all we need. They were horrified at the thought of not getting groceries from a large store chain like walmart or giant eagle or a topps. I told them we know the owner of the local grocer and he makes every effort to purchase what he can locally rather than all corners of the country. Got to talking with a few of her uncles who are gun collecters. Theyve got some very nice pieces and are very proud of them. I asked do you hunt? They looked at me with that deer in the headlight stare. No place to hunt locally, but they are working on getting into a guided tour they said  I asked where they go to shoot, they have to drive to a gun range almost an hour away. I really blew their mind when I told em I just set up off my back deck whenever I feel like popping off a few rounds. Theyve never even rode an atv, if you can wrap your mind around that one  And yet they think we live a sheltered life! If this is sheltered, Ill keep it :)

Like 4H? Even that's extinct around here but I see them at the NJ State fair I like to hit.
Can't wait to bug outta here.

It is similar to 4H but FFA is actually a credited school class that is part of a students day. Actually it generally takes up 2 periods and the students learn about a number of things ranging from agricultural buisiness, livestock, crops, soil conservation, the list goes on and on. Our FFA class also had a shop where they taught us basic mechanics, welding skills, and carpentry. FFA is a national program and every year each school with a program picks a handful of reps to go to the national convention in Kansas? (I think). Its been many years since I was involved and I never went so I cant remember for sure. It is a great class for the student who is looking to have an agricultural related career, really gives them a good head start.

Here is a link if your interested.

I dont think that the author was really bashing commercial slaughterhouses its a job, production line butchers you'll have to admit its pretty gory to see the way that the meat is handled, and the care of the animals before slaughter has been in the news many times for inhumane practices. I know they are going to be on the hook anyway and didn't have much of a life but, come on some of its on the weird side of things. The processor cant take our animals away live they have to be killed on premise (dont ask me why) the wife usually kills them they know her and are not alarmed by the sounds and anyone else THEY ARE JUST DEAD!!! then the processor finishes the job. I cant watch I get attached to them I care for the beef, pig (chickens dont count) the wife or I take care of them anyway minutes before they are on the table.

D4L I hear ya my Sister and Brother and their spouses came out for the holidays. My Brother is ok with the way things are and living RURAL is part of his plans, Sister on the other hand has lived a Shirley Temple life FOR EVER!!! On Sunday we usually have fried chicken the wife said to get 4 chickens from the store! my Sister said I need to go to the store so I will ride in with you. So I jumped in the Gator and drove to the chicken coop chopped the heads off of 4 and brought them up to the house. She got all weird about it they were JUST ALIVE so were the other ones that you buy in the store A WEEK A GO!!

For the gun shooting I have a bench that is now buried in about 4 ft of snow. So if I go shooting now its off the deck but the Wife gets upset when I fire the larger guns because even with the windows shut the mini blinds rattle and it disturbs her.

I have 2 things to add. 1st, I've never heard of a person raised on a farm treating animals badly. You learn early on that they are your livelihood and also that they are Gods creatures and deserve to be treated as such. 2nd, if slaughter houses had picture windows there would be a lot more vegetarians .

That's a great ethic. I respect that. Ever see the movie "Temple Grandin" http://en. wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_Grandin_%28film%29 I stumbled upon it, and it was great. Has mostly to do with her dealing with Autism/ Aspergers, but what she wound up doing was great...

Hey Big,
That vid was shot by the same people that don't want you or I hunting. There could be a slightly slanted lens if you know what I mean.
We had an incident here in Ohio where a animal rights activist went undercover at a local dairy farm and shot video of himself abusing animals. Some people is right!
I totally agree that meat processing isn't the most entertaining thing to watch, but neither is gutting a deer...
I had several friends in college that worked at the OSU (That's The Ohio State University) meat lab; watching them, you learn how a processor is supposed to be ran. Clean, humanely and efficiently.
Regards,

Andrew

I used to go to the slaughterhouse with my loads of beef, watched them be "processed", at first I was a bit squemish over the sensory overload. After a bit you realise that it is a disassembly plant. ANd that we humans are meat eaters, always have been. With the human poopulation running over 7 billion food will become a more and more precious commodity. Modern agriculture is a wonder, and a necessity no matter how you see it, good or bad. The simple fact is that without the scientific advances of agriculture our population would be MUCH smaller than it is today.

YA I seen the acknowledgments at the end of the Vid also. But no matter what side of the fence you are on the vid dont lie. I eat meat thats why God gave us I teeth. I also like a good salad and veggies. Its the cruel treatment that gets me they dont have to treat an animal like that dragging it away with one leg in a chain and still kicking and then cutting its neck ???????????????

The first time I saw the wife kill was I thought REALLY BAD!!! She takes a good sized BALLPEEN hammer from my tool box NOT SHOWING IT TO THE BEEF walks up and pets the animal on the head. There is a spot on the forehead that she feels for turns to the side of the animal and it NEVER SEE'S IT COMING it drops in its track is it DEAD? NO!!! The reason for this is that the rest of the family eats the brains and really dont want skull in the mix from some PHENUMATIC prod that SOMETIMES WORKS. They also use the blood for blood sausage the Beef needs to pump that out for them into a jar or 2. My Dad grew up on a farm in Nebraska when he seen the wife do it like this he said thats the way we did it for as long as he could remember it has never failed.

It may sound cruel but I have had my BELL RUNG playing football in High School and I can assure you that I DIDNT FEEL A THING until I got out of the Hospital and seen the game films. The bleeding out part I can testify that aint to bad of a way to go you get cold like you never felt before or again and you sleep ONLY I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO WAKE UP AGAIN.

For the hunting part you will NEVER!!!! SEE AN ANIMAL with Me or It In a picture that I have taken. I HONOR the animal for the giving of its life to me for my enjoyment and nourishment, It would be a DISCRASSE to remember it like that when I pull the trigger Im the last one to see it in its Glory that is how it should be, not some PRIZE to hang on a wall and say to other's see what I DID. :D Yes Ive taken many pictures for other to hang on their wall I figure each to their own and they did pay an inordinate amount of money to do what they want. The field care of the animal is sometimes pretty ugly mainly because (here it goes again) people dont know how to shoot and or using an inappropriate weapon of choice THIS ABOVE ALL ERKS ME TO KNOW END. If done right!!! blood yes but in the field cleanliness and QUICK kills are the key to MEALS FIT FOR A KING.
