I drive a school bus in Mass. and three times a year the buses get inspected by a state trooper, AKA Lenny. In January I left the garage in the AM enjoying my straight pipe exhaust. The head mechanic said that Lenny's ears perked up as he said I bet he doesn't have a muffler.

There is another driver who sells Hebal Life and has big stickers on her caravan saying so. Lenny spoke to her saying that she needs to get a commercial registration or she could be fined $1500. She changed the registration.

When the mechanic told me that Lenny was after me. I told him that I had gotten two inspection stickers before. John the mechanic said that it didn't matter. Lenny would still ticket me and then go after the station that gave me the sticker!

Lucky for me I live close enough to walk to work, this has given me time to work on my truck. To avoid getting two more points on my license I have put a muffler on my truck. I hate it. One of the best things about my truck has been taken away.

I know it is wrong to straight pipe but I also know there are others who have louder pipes (no offense, Harleys that I can hear from a quarter mile away) who still are able to enjoy them.

I miss my pipe bad. I guess I am going to have to save for a Rip Rook system or figure out how to take the baffles out of mufflers!

Art,

We used to cut out the baffles with a torch. Only takes a few minutes to completely gut a muffler.

Sounds like Lenny's a real Pr**k.

Good luck.

I miss mine too, inspections and the law were never a problem. I had to put the muffler on so I could run at the local dragstrip, I tried arguing that if it was inspectable and driveable it should be good enough for them... ... . no muffler no run... Stan's said the big straight through Donaldson would have no back pressure..... I can hear the radio now on the highway, but when I put the muffler on I went from a turn down in front of the axle to a turn out in front of the rear tire. Even with the straight pipe I was quieter than the H-D's that run around here...

We've got our own version of "Lenny" here. We call him Dually Dan,although now he drives an SUV so now i call him SUV Dan. He must be related to your "friend" 'cause he's a real pr*ck right down to the chrome shades...

Yup, just like every other Highway patrol man I've ever had the misfortune to be in the presence of. Had one in MO pull Mom over when I was about 14, ticketed her for 73 in a 60!!!! She was doing nowhere NEAR that speed; "his buddy up the road clocked her. " BS.

For more abuses by those in power, check the OTHER forum late next week- I'm supposed to go to court Wed, (if I dont crack before then:rolleyes: ), then it is SUPPOSED to be over, after 16mo for something I didnt even do, no real evidence I was guilty, etc, etc. Just hope we payed the lawyer enough money for him to slip to the judge- this is sentenceing day coming up. If you believe it's always on the up and up, I do feel for you naievity (sp?), and WELCOME TO THE SOUTH!!! WOO HOOO Oo. Oo. Oo.

Dont even get me started on Harleys. Talk about selective law enforcement.

Nothing against Harleys, but what's the difference in a pack of Harleys leaving the bar at 2:30am,and a Semi coming into town in the middle of the day with the "Jake Brake" on?

Face it, a pack of Harleys is much more intimidating to pull over and write up for 'loud muffler'. I had a prettly loud Harley a few years back and was never bothered, but the local "Lenny" in the town I work in pulled me over in my Torino on day after work and wrote me up for loud exhaust. The funny thing was I didn't do anything to repair it. I just waited a few days and took it down to the local PD and they wrote it off for me. Couldn't believe it!

I use to drive a school bus Buzz, too bad the "fuzz" does not have enough to do. In CA they use technololgy. They have cameras in intersections (Orange County), man can they make

$-mula. My in-laws tell me last night at dinner, "Oh I saw you on TV news for running that red light, good pictures of the rig", the Mrs. freaks out, no I did not tell them it cost $375. 00 including traffic school. Be safe whatever you do, but have fun.

Patrick.

Here in ohio if you have 13 feet of pipe you don't have to have a muffler. I never messured how far it was from the turbo to the top of the stack behind the cab.

Just do like I did. Get a BIG DOG tip. It makes it a "little" quieter and looks cool. Plus, it can be a muffler if you want it to be.

When you look into the end, you can see the inards and they look just like a glass pack muffler does. As long as super trouper doesn't stick to the letter of the law about modifying an exhaust system, you can say "look, there's the muffler right there".
