I think it's a bad idea too, but here's how I'd do it. I'd get one of the drawtite front hitches (I have one on my rig and love it), and then get one of the front spare tire mounts that slide into the reciever.

This is what I was going to suggest. This way you can mount it off to one side.
You can also (unless youre going to tow) have a bracket custom welded to use in the 2" receiver on the back of the truck. Just have it extended, and put a HD hinge on it. It'll be sort of like the one on earthroamer.

Deezul Doug: You may be able to use the spare tire winch if you have a few inches of room. (Just the space over the bumber is enough!) Here's what I did: Find a 2" long bolt with a head the size (5/8" for my truck) of the winch tube opening. Add two nuts (I used ny-Loc type locking nuts) of the proper size to the bolt and lock them together on the end of the bolt with the nut faces lined up. You can then insert the double nut end of the bolt into the winch tube and use a socket or wrench on the head end to lower your spare.

When I'm at home I use a small air socket tool to raise and lower the spare using this adapter.

Thanks for the ideas, guys.

I guess it's NOT a good idea to block the radiator/intercooler with the spare- especially with a slide in camper towing in the summertime.

OK,here's the problem- I'm looking into slide in truck campers. They overhang the rear of the bed blocking access to the spare tire winch. I figure if I can relocate the spare tire to the front bumper, I can install a 38 gal. aux. fuel tank behind the axle...

Has anyone seen a mount manufactured to put the spare in front of the grill???

There has been articles of doing this in past issues of the TDR. It has been said that this is not a good idea. Blocking the air flow to the radiator and intercooler come to mind.

What about placing the spare on top of the camper (in the roof rack)?

What about purchasing a Transfer Flow 54 gal. replacement fuel tank? The spare situation would be solved.

If all else fails, JC Whitney sells bumper mount spare tire mounts although I'm not sure if they are available for the second gen. Ram application.

Looks like you already got some answers so this is a repeat but thought you might like to know that I was going to do this on my 92 Dodge/Cummins Combo and when I asked Cummins about it they said it would void my engine warranty because air flow was restricted.
