Anyone else see this months issue of Jp (jeep) magazine where they put a spicer 3053a out of a 2 1/2 ton M35 military Deuce into a m715 Jeep pickup... Well the basics of it are cheep trans... less than 900$ rebuilt... it is an overdrive . 85 or . 75 depending on model and only 1" longer than the NV4500... It also is rated for 23. 8k gvwr... the 4500 is only rated at 14. 5k... . input shaft is 1 1/2 -10 spline and the output is 1 1/2 - 10 spline... needless to say no more broken input shafts... .

now for the bad news right no one makes an adapter for a marred transfer case (rube adapter is reportedly working on one) ... so a divorced transfer case is the only way to put one in right now. . and to put one behind a cummins we would have to find the right SAE adapter plate. . (shouldn't be that hard)

Well what do you guys think ... this is one I have never seen talked about before doesn't look that much bigger than a Gutbag. . and a whole lot more bulletproof... and with the whole trans costing less than the parts to fix a burnt Getrag it looks good. . I am going to call Rube tomorrow and ask if they are working on one and if so what the cost would be to mate to a 205. . I may have to pay for a custom adapter and move the drive lines around a bit but it would be the end of transmission issues... ...

I am suprised more people aren't interested in this. I am interested to see how it comes out and I don't even have a truck I would want to do it on.

Here is a chart showing gear ratios of the transmission and the gear ratios of some other transmissions, including the NV4500.

More than likely after the time and money, fabricating, doing the R&D, you'll be better off going with a nv4500 or nv5600 swap.

RHancock... did you ever go this route? If so, what flyweel and pressure plate did you go with? Did you have to space the trans from the engine?

Thanks.

Never did go this way, the Getrag is still living, and not groaning too bad. I figure it only costs about 250$ to rebuild my Getrag and it will take me lots of miles even abusing it to recoup the cost of doing a 3053a.

I have looked into it further. If you are interested you could use the belhousing and adaper plate off a 5 speed non od trans out of a c70 chevy with the cummins to turbo 400 adapter. then get a 13" clutch disc for the 1. 5" -10 spline input shaft. the only issue will possibly be firewall to belhousing as it is designed for a 14" clutch an flywheel package.

The way I figured it I would be in it about 1200$ plus my time at the least. That buys alot of bearings, sincro's and input shafts for a Getrag...

The only problems I can see with the M35 trans are the odd shift pattern (not a problem after a few hours of around town driving it) and perhaps the stiffer, harder shifts then the G360/NV4500 that most of us are used to in 1ton pickups. It is a good idea however, and a cost effective one, especially if those driving it didnt mind a bit more noise from the trans and a trickier shift.

I bring up the Spicer as it is fairly close in size to the NV4500 and it has an SAE3 bellhousing on it. I am looking at doing a project with an ISB170 into a Dodge Truck. The ISB has the gear case on the rear with a machined SAE3 adapter. I can't find anyone who can confirm or deny the ability to remove that gear case and adapt one from the 4BT or the 6BT but figure even if so there would be some injection pump issues as the ISB uses common rail and the others use the appropriate pump for the year and so forth.

I am thinking the Spicer, with a 13" clutch, using a Cummins appropriate pressure plate and starter. My questions now would be if there would be a spacing issue between the engine and the transmission that I would need to deal with.

The other trannys I have seen with an actual SAE3 bellhousing are either a four with no overdrive or too big for a regular light duty truck.

Make sense? Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks.

The 3053B is almost impossiable to find. The A is in most duces with a multifuel motor, and There is a 3053 with no overdrive found in the old duces with the gas motor. There is no transmission mount on the transmission, the duce uses 3 motor monts instead of the normal 2. 1st gear isnt aynchronized, but the rest is and my 3053 shifts pretty good.
