SRW vs DRW for towing

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

What do you haul in your TOYHAULERS???

need 5th wheel towed from livingston tx to green bay wis

I don't have any experience with SRW vs. DRW, but I THINK my motor oil works better than your motor oil! Or how about this: "My other car is better than your other car!"

Whew, there for a while I was feeling a little guilty over childishly flaming one of the posters. But thankfully I didn't mention the n word. :)

Marla, if you eed any more useful advice be sure to stop by the TDR and ask. As you can see we are full of it, so to speak. :-laf

I havent' read every single post But would like to make a few coments

I own a 2006 DRW with 6sp and a 3. 73 rearends 4x4. I haul a bumper pull style utility trailer IE not a camper and weigh in at about 25K lbs.

millage sucks 8-9 isssh but I can run 75 all day with no issues. I'm not sure about the auto but if I have the 4. 10 in the manual I would be really not happy. Millage gets better if I slow down. check out this spreadsheet

http://www.klenger.net/dodge/general-reference/gear-speed-calculator.xls

I don't know which auto you will get or if all the info is correct in this spreadsheet but it seems to be. This will give you an idea how the truck will be at a given speed and gear.

Currently I have a '96 3500 auto 3. 54 and an '05 3500 SRW LB QC NV5600 3. 73 . I have towed heavy with both. I tow 3 different gooseneck trailers and 1 bumper pull. The bumper pull is rated at 10K lb and the other 3 are quite bit higher. BOTH trucks tow the loads great with each doing some things better than the other. I have never had a problem with the gearing. I guess all I'm saying is IMO you can't go wrong any way you go unless you don't get what you want. I think both of my trucks are great for what I do with them. I seriously considered a Ford this time but the Cummins kept me with the Dodge.

How fast do you normally tow and is most of your towing in the mountains? I have towed heavy loads since the sixties with far less truck than these new ones. You couldn't run fast enough to give me a dually or a Dodge with 4. 10s. Let us know how the new one does for you.

Heh,guys, I didn't mean to start a war!!! Just wanted some help from the guys that have the trucks we were thinking about. Sorry.....

We ordered the DRW with the auto and 4:10 rear end. This way if we ever want to upgrade our trailer we'll have plenty of truck. I know our mileage will stink but then when we retire and have to watch our pennies, we'll just travel alittle less and alittle slower. We have the 4:10 rear end in our current 2500 so we are use to the mileage. And he loves the "feel" of the power when we are going up the hills.

Thanks again guys. Will let you know how much we love it when it gets here!

Don't worry about it! :-laf We tend to have certain subjects that will always start wars - SRW versus DRW, what oil to use, what automatic transmission rebuilder to use, what is the best year truck, 12V versus 24V, etc. , etc.

It should be a nice rig. Hope you get many years and miles of enjoyment out of it!

Again enjoy what you get ... . I just wanted to point out that the 4. 10 isn't a requirement for pulling and or pulling well. the 3. 73 will work and the 4. 10 will also work, just know that it isn't a requirement to tow.

Enjoy
