ST Tires Again - But Different

Just returned Friday from putting another 1,000 miles on the Goodyear Endurance tires, all are looking good. Very pleased, they are meeting my needs. Total miles on them so far, about 9,000.

ST tires. Made so poorly it’s against the law to install on a passenger vehicle. Why bother?

LT are better by every measure. ST rating is a recent invention. An inferior substitute.

A single incident of tire loss on a highway introduces a risk not ever worth taking. Who is on the road today wasn’t in 1978. In-born stupidity reigns.

That risk before trailer $$$ damages.

Then again, maybe this is the crowd that passes my Peterbilt when I’m running 68-mph. In which case, bleach for the gene pool. Have at it.

And what happened to ranchers/farmers? Now the worst on the road for high risk driving. Barely exceeded by the toyhauler crowd.

Had one of the Maxxis tires seperate while parked here in Mesa Az.. The tire was 5 years old with two round trips to Minot ND. along with a few trips to Flagstaff. I had two Coopers on the other side and while traveling back from Minot last December a pinhole in the Chinese rim allowed one of them to run hot so Discount Tire warrantied and installed a Goodyear endurance. Same today in Tempe Az. Now I have two Goodyears, one Cooper and one Maxxis. I told the guy at Discount I have another Maxxis on the same side and they were purchased a Month apart. He replied to bring it in and they will warranty that one also.

More like what happened to the farmers. Period. The vast majority of family owned farms have gone by the way side to large commercial farms. I learned to drive an IH 5088 full cab with a tri 6 (18 speed) around the age of 10. My boys were fortunate enough to learn how to drive the same rig among others. Many of the kids I grew up with that were born and raised on farms can't say the same. So ya got these humongous farms that are run more like a factory assembly line, and the mostly temporary hired hands tend to not be as profiecient at running equipment or trucks/trailers as were days gone by. Which is probably what your seeing on the roads.

Goodyear Endurance ST failed my pre-trip inspection before taking the RV on another trip. I put a set on my 27' Arctic Fox 5th wheel in February 2018 because the LT's on it were 7 years old and starting to show cracking. Warranty: All four Goodyear Endurance ST came back off October 2018 with groove cracking and a nasty cut between the grooves on one of them. No sidewall cracking however. 7/32 left of the 8/32nds they come with. Something about Arizona or just another ST tire not up to the challenge. IMO the sheer forces of turning is ripping the tread lugs off the ST Endurance. This was a slow RV year only going to Lake Alamo and The Rim twice. Not even 2000 miles. I have tire covers on them when parked. The spare was fine of course but returned to match the others. Ran at 80 PSI. I put Commercial Michelin XPS Rib on to replace the Badyears. I am disappointed, but, not surprised. I had my hopes up when posts about them were showing up to where I tried them out. The XPS Rib has a deeper tread 15/32nds that may have avoided the cut. They did not separate or blow up so there is some good to them.

Back to the heaviest duty LT's I can get for my trailers/RV's.

YOU are the FIRST to report an issue with the GY Endurance tires over the two years they have been out that I have heard of.

Did you take back to have it warranted??? If so what did they say. First pic looks like road hazard to me. The rest I would like to hear from GY what they say.

Discount Tire warrantied all 4 due to groove cracking. I will ask, but, I doubt I will hear back from Goodyear. Discount Tire used the certs so I didn't have to pro-rate the tires. I am in the store enough that I will ask if DT ever hears back on them. It cost me 4 certificates ~$200 and cost difference of the tires ~$300 over the 5 tires. So I am not out a lot to have tried the new GY ST's.

For the record I do weigh the RV and I am not overloaded. I generally run 65 - 70 when conditions allow. Some grades are 50 MPH...

The tire that had a road hazard was also cracking and did not loose air. Luck.

The main takeaway here is the tires failed inspection rather than completely failed on the trailer. Thus "issue" not "problem".

Discount Tire has done well to take care of me over the years including using a safety cage to inflate new tires. Years ago one tire they were putting on for my truck got a damaged bead during mounting and exploded in the cage. Yeah, lightning strike loud "BOOM!" Aftermarket rims were blamed for not enough undercut to allow a safe mounting and truly at fault. DT's investment in all the safety equipment paid off then and there. No injuries just carry on after emptying out underwear... So credit due for promoting and actually acting on safety first.

I've bought several sets of tires from DT. One thing that caught my eye at a store was 1st thing on a sat am startup the tech put the balance calibration weight in machine and ran calibration program.

Also watched the techs and they seem to have a pretty tight procedure even having a spotter to put a car in and OUT.

I converted to 16" Michelin's a few years back. Working well. Airforums has a big Endurance thread and don't remember seeing issues lately. That is not a conclusive report. GYM's are a different story.

The XPS RIB's won't disappoint. I've had lots of miles on them in the past when the trailers I had could use those.

GY Endurance tires came on out new Arctic Fox TT last year. We probably have about 3~4K on them without issue.
I was a big fan of Maxxiss tires before that but the last set we got had problems (tread seperation) and it looks like they are slipping from what I read on various forums.
While I'm no fan of GY (they cheated me bad when I was a kid and tried to do so again 40 years later), it's looking like they are the best thing going for a decent ST tire.

Well, I bit the bullet - trying a set of the Endurance tires. Being 15" and no room for larger I'm stuck with 15". Cheapest place was online - Simpletire.com. I got them and no issues, they aren't old, etc.

Now to mount and balance them, check brakes, repack bearings, etc on the next nice weekend. Then the camper should be good to go for the summer and to the TDR rally.

Not sure any tire was have handled this bolt. Left rear tire on our little 2019 Laredo 225MK.
