i have 2 6 inch chrome stacks... i want to paint them black. . does anyone know if this will work or should i take the crap and just deal with the scratches:confused:

I don't think the paint will stick to the hard chrome surface even if you scuff it up. However when I put the rust converter on my bottom door edge, some driped on my westin bars, off came the chrome (looked like a drip). Draino, lye, oven cleaner, etc may get the chrome plating off... then a good quality heat paint should stick.

Thats what I did. I was inspired by the flat black stacks on Big Bad Dodge 1.

The guy at NAPA steered me to their new VHT 1300-2000 degree header paint in the rattle can.

After one year I can't complain about the stuff. Did my turbo and manifold too. Still on there.

I first sanded the chrome and rust on the stacks. Then sprayed with self etching primer, the green stuff, for maximum adhesion. Then the black. the exhaust heat will kind of bake it on for ya.

The VHT works ok. I used it on a set of headers for my BBC years ago. I could see it working better on stacks or cast iron... But headers? Never again.

Maybe a 180 grit on an orbital sander and then a heavy dose would work on the stacks.

Maybe you could contact a local chrome/electroplating shop. They might have an acid dip tank that they use for just such occasions. Those places usually have to clean up their workpieces before plating them and acids tanks are the way to do it. Seems like if you have one close by it would be a lot easier and a better surface for your paint than doing it yourself.
