Does anyone know the amps my starter should draw? Over the course of a day and about 8 starts the thing won't hardly turn over. I had a system check done & it showed the starter was drawing about 580 amps but they didn't know what it should be drawing. Do I need a new starter? I fully charged the batteries and still the same results...

Thanks,

Lonnie

do a search on starter contacts. they are probably not making a good connection. you can hit a local auto electric shop and ask for part #'s

nippondenso S-5260 qty. 2 (should be around $6 to $19 a pair)

this is the larger "super" contact.

and

NDE0536600443 qty. 1 (should be around $5 to $12 each)

this is the plunger you should replace at the same time.

i had a place i was getting them for the TDR members but they moved too far away from me around the first of the year. I can get you their contact info if you would like to do a mail order. they kinda frowned on that sort of thing. that is why i was getting the parts and mailing them for folks.

Todd,

I just replaced the contacts & plunger not 3 months with the Larry B. special. I'd think they would last longer then that! The original ones were just about toast.

Right now the starter will just barely turn it over and very slow. I'm confused...

there is a wire that comes up to the battery terminal on the drivers side. clean it and grease with dielectric grease. also there is a starter relay. on the firewall. and your fuel shutoff solenoid is wired through this. maybe it has a bad connection or short that is drawing your battery load there.

I would also check out the overall condition of batteries. The batteries may be losing their load carrying/charge holding performance, especially if they are several years old.

The starting system components form two separate circuits. A high-amperage feed circuit that feeds the starter 700 amperes (diesel engine) and a low-amperage control circuit that operates on less than 20 amperes.
