I had posted about this earlier this year when it was still cool out, and now that the cold has returned, so has my problems. When starting the truck in the morning, the heaters will cycle and when the switch is turned to the start position, the truck will start for about 2 seconds and kill. Eventually it will start and spit and sputter, but it does clear up and run fine then. Fuel milage hasn't dropped and power and performance seems the same. I pressurized the tank and found no leaks in any fuel lines, replaced the injectors, and installed a new lift pump. I've also put a jumper wire from the battery to the fuel solenoid and I can hear it click plain as day, but even with the jumper wire, it still won't start right away. I'm open to any ideas to try at this point. Any advice is much appreciated.

Acording to the little book in the glove box, our trucks have a fuel heater built into the lines, I would check to see if yours is operating correctly. Is there a possibilty that the fuel shut-off is sticking? I hate to point you in the wrong direction, but it messed with me a couple of times, but I was driving down the road. Do your lights dim as the heaters cycle through?

i would have to say. it deals with some heater on the truck. the "air heater" sounds like it's working. if there is some sort of a fuel heater i would check into that like... now! does block heater work? if it does do u plug it in?... . john deere 4430 tractor (diesel) at work wouldn't start today. it has no glow plugs ect. heater on it. and just cranking at it won't start it. so we have to plug it in to get her started under 30 degrees. but if it's cold out and she starts she will run fine <(was use to support my reply)

so i really suggest plugging ur cummins in or getting that to work if it doesn't (seems like u live north of me) all diesels start hard in the cold and some won't even start without being pluged in. but all diesels love cold air to run on not starting tho (can't win can we) also... what temp. does your cummins start hard or not start. we talking 30 degrees or are we talking 10 degrees??

The lights do dim while driving down the road for the first mile and a half or so. I have taken to plugging the truck in at home, but at work, thats not an option. The truck only gets hard to start when the temps start to dip below 40. My other trucks will still start just fine.

Thanks,

Dustin

WHat is your timing set to? DOes the KSB function? Either one of them could cause a hard start. I have yet to encounter any problems of this type with the SuperB- I've started them in single digits at work (unplugged) with no probelms- so I'm just shooting in the dark here. My KSB makes no difference at all whether I have it hooked up or not. Timing is about 1. 65mm. If yours has been stock all along, it may have worn to less than stock, thus possibly making it hard to start.

KSB for me!

I found that when my KSB connection was loose it would start rough and smoke more. Once the connection was good the idle would smooth out and the smoke would go away. My best guess.

PS the KSB was made to make it easier to start in cold weather.

The description of the KSB function are pretty much right on... it only functions for a short time anyway... until intake air reaches about 90*F I think it is...

The heaters draw the big power but your "on the road symptoms" sound like battery trouble to me... . 'course I really suck at electrical stuff but I'd get the battery tested with a proper load down to see if you have a/some bad cells.

The reason I am leaning this way is because the alternator on our trucks have a peak output of 120 Amps... Now the max duty cycle will be less than that but with the engine at road RPM and the battery in good shape there is no real reason for noticably dimming lights.

Most of these trucks in good tune will start down as low as -30*F... . they sound like crap, but they will start.

Have you checked out the battery yet????

pb...
