Once you guys turn up your trucks some so much how in the devil do yopu pass emissions each year ? Do you have to turn them back down? The other night I took my truck in to have it tested passed with flying colors , 40 opacitys wa s tops mine was 5. 4 opacitys I have know idea what in the heck an opacity is . Maybe its just a name they dreamed up so they can charge you for ($27. 50) to stomp the throttle to the floor 6 or 8 times for about 20 seconds each time , thought it might blow but she held together. what a dumb test.

You Think That's Dumb.....

I've got one for ya. Bluebird busses begin to install back-up lights at the rear side corners. Real nice when you back-up while making a turn right!? Well the state inspectors tell us these ain't legal in the state of Ohio :( :confused: so we have to disable/remove/render inop right. Well, a number of years later[now]they say we want these lights on the bus. So I say, well, thay are inop as per you'r request and likely to remain such as I'm covered up with repairs as is. They say, you gotta get 'em working! :mad: :-{}

Why did I pay for a new TV set and only got ONE!?

Emissions test? ? ?

PLandon, glad you passed.

In CA no test for diesel vehicles, and 135 people want to be govenor :p

I hope I don't jinx anything here:rolleyes:

My rig is stock anyway. Great truck:D Patrick.

AZ. Smog Test

P. Landon,

I just had my '91 W250 tested last week and it showed 39. 9 on the opacity. I had just cleaned and oiled an old K&N filter and installed it thinking it would breathe better than the stock air filter. Two years ago, I showed 2. 5. Maybe I needed to drive on the K&N a little longer before testing the truck or something is starting to get out of whack. I have about 165,000 mi. on the truck with a Banks exhaust, 16 sqcm. turbo, had the injection pump "calibrated" by Diesel performance Center in Phoenix, had an ATS transmission with a Triple-Lock torque converter put in in June of '02. It's been a really good truck. I've owned it since new and really enjoy it. Hope You like yours as much as I like mine.

Well, emissions testing is just about to start up again in Ct after a 2 year absence. (they had so much corruption they had to start a new system).

So as soon as I get the notice and get tested I'll let you all know how I did.

Problem here is that the testing will now all be done by private garages, and only 2 of 50 stations in my county will do diesels, so getting tested may be a pita.

emisions

Buffalo,Hey, How did you like Diesel Proformance CENTER? I've been thinking about using them. But they want the truck all day and I live out in Queen Creek its kinda tuff to get there and leave it. How much did charge to do the tweaking on your pump? Mine is all stock , i did cut off the muffler but thats it so far. I do enjoy the truck alot I'd like to get a 16cm housing sometime soon. If you live in the area maybe we can get together sometime.

State smog emissions?

PLandon, Regarding Diesel Performance Center, they "removed & calibrated" my pump on 8/12/99, at a cost of $310. 00. IMO it made quite a difference. I had Bell Dodge and Chuck's Speed Center both "turn-up" the pump. Each time it made a small difference. But, "calibrating" it made a BIG difference. Lot's more smoke and if you have an auto-trans, you may have to adjust the throttle positioning sensor, like I did. I was told "calibrating" requires taking the pump off, putting it on a machine that balances the flow of fuel to each of the cylinders. I'm no mechanic but, whatever they did worked great for me. I just called Southwest Diesel and Elec. , here in Phoenix, 602-269-2471 (Dave), and they have a 16 sqcm. turbo housing for $150. 00 plus $5. 00 for a gasket. That's about what I paid back in 1999 for mine. That turbo housing made alot of difference, also. There are a lot of different ways to make these things run better. This is some of what I did & I'm happy. Hope this helps. By the way, I'd be happy to talk to you. Joe Fihn, 602-978-3111.

Well I dont know how the other guys did it and my truck is stock but has the pump turned up a little.

What I did is when they tell you to floor it I just rolled on the throttle hard about 2/3 of the way down or about 1800 rpms.

The lady made me do that about 15 times tho and it passed w/ an 8 I think.

Anyways that works for me maybe some of you it wont.

Oh BTW make sure you press the throttle down the same ammount every time or the computer will know if your going slightly less or more & get crankey. Possibly a block of wood under the pedal?

Possibly a block of wood under the pedal?

I like you're style!

Or perhaps a slight change to the governor stop before you make the trip to the emissions station?

Or simply a "slight" rotation of the fuel pin?

Jay

I thought about that but the block of wood was an easy 1 second mod.

If they wont let you drive your own truck on the rollers then I would mess with the pump. I just didnt want to play with it because it is running good now.

In Ct, IF you fail the retest, you can get an exemption provided you show proof of spending $660 (who came up with that figure) on emissions related repairs.

So, the question is, IF I were to fail, what would I replace/adjust to total $660 on emissions?

New injectors? (PODs? Bosch 185s?)

Timing advance?

Old Smoky fuel pin?

Intercooler?

Bigger exhaust?

Might as well make a contingiency plan. I would only have 30 days to get the "repairs" completed.

Jay

I would get your pump rebuilt or recalibrated or what have you. That should more than cover the 600 bucks and if you havent done it before it couldnt hurt if your truck as a few miles on it.

Injectors dont hurt either. BTW last I heard in WA we only had to pay 300 for emissoins mods but they have to be done by a certified shop and that's only the parts cost I belive???? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Had to take my truck through emissions yesterday. In Tucson, they use a dyno test (put on rollers and hold around between 47-53 MPH - too bad they don't check HP/torque at the same time;)). Phoenix may use a different method.

My truck was allowed 30% opacity - I passed with a . 5%. :D

In Ct the $660 includes labor and is supossed to be done by the certified emissions testing garages.

BUT... if they are not Cummins certified mechanics, they will NOT touch my engine.

I would think that with receipts for just parts (or maybe pump service) for the required amount and a good long technical letter explaining the situatuion that I could "slime" my way thru it if need be.
